Best luxury candle

I’ve been buying a ‘treat’ candle a couple of times a year from a local producer. They’re soy wax and a blend of essential oils. My husband likes them so they’re usually a treat for him. I’ve just gone to buy a couple of Christmas and they’re working out at £35 each!

It’s made me pause and I wanted to know whether there I anything else out there at a more reasonable price? I like something fairly strong smelling and a Christmas vibe would be great. What do you use and does it cost as much?

St Eval candles are fairly strong and have a few 'festive' scents. The ones in 'tins' are about £15 and they burn really well (also soy).

I’ve been disappointed in my last few St Eval candles - to the point that I actually emailed asking if I had been sent one from a dodgy batch, and they sent me a replacement free of charge which was also not great. I’m really loving the White Company Fireside candle at the mo, which is £22.

Alifemoreordinary123 · 20/11/2024 22:42

Thank you - will look at both. I was hoping for 50 conclusive replies but perhaps good candles are harder to come by than I thought!

Neom's 'Cosy Nights' is lovely

Somewhereoverthesea · 20/11/2024 22:49

Another vote for the White Company’s Fireside here, absolutely love it and have a savings pot to save up and then stock up for winter each year as it is only seasonally.

St Eval Embers is/was similar, but I’m not sure they do it anymore.

CherryBombe · 20/11/2024 22:53

Murmur candles are brilliant! They have a great scent that really fills the room: they burn really evenly though! Love them!

Ha! I thought I would economise and get Embers (which I had several times last year and they were lovely) and it is rubbish. I’m burning one right now but have a Fireside in the hall cupboard waiting. I did buy it on Amazon so maybe it’s an old one.

Dyptique, by far. But SO expensive. Beautiful scents. Feu de Bois and Bais are beautiful, as well as Figeuir.

Alifemoreordinary123 · 20/11/2024 23:00

Thank you all - will be hunting down a Fireside (or two). Heard great things about Dyptique but same issues cost-wise.

M&S do a mandarin, clove and cinnamon candle every Christmas that smells expensive, festive and wonderful IMO. £10/£20 depending on size

mitogoshigg · 20/11/2024 23:08

I have the knock off ones from Lidl, they smell good and aren't expensive, can afford some treat wine, chocolate and their delicious beef wellington's for the price you paid.

St Eval have collaborated with TK Maxx for Xmas and have a few nice ones in tins by the tills. Their regular candles are in TKs often too and have a decent throw and rather nice scents- avoid the other TKs own brand ones though waste of money.

otherwise you can’t beat Diptyque, Byredo or Cire Trudon.

EmberAsh · 20/11/2024 23:14

M&S apothecary candles are good and often on offer

Bailiwitch · 20/11/2024 23:29

If you’re anywhere near a TK Maxx they always have candles and sometimes stock genuinely desirable brands. It’s actually worth an in person visit because not everything seems to go onto the website.

But good full price candles are unfortunately worth their weight in gold. I’m currently enjoying ‘Marmalade’ by Perfumer H. It’s like the Platonic ideal of the memory of a single, perfect afternoon by the fire, with thickly sliced barely toasted sourdough bread, the best butter, and marmalade the like of which you’ll never taste again as long as you live. Two days in and I already need the giant sized, triple wick, hand blown glass container iteration …

Try Vinted for diptyque candles - I’ve been lucky a few times ! Do check it’s not an empty glass though as some sellers sell this when the candle has burned through!

You mentioned essential oil based scents as opposed to fragrance: the best brand for scent throw using essential oils is This Works, which I only buy in TK MAXX at £12.99 (RRP is about £26).

Love them.

Overtheatlantic · 21/11/2024 06:08

Lilyflame tins are my favourite for scent and White Company for the aesthetic. Btw, John Lewis is having a good sale on their candles.

yohohoCrimbo · 21/11/2024 23:26

Tyler Aromatherapy is a small business owner and I've bought some beautiful candles from there. Stunning candle holders with a really lovely fragrance.

Autumnweddingguest · 21/11/2024 23:32

White Company do gorgeous Winter/Christmas candles.

St Eval Inspiritus is lovely.

I smelled some brilliant ones in M&S this year - very impressed and might try them instead.

For budget candles, Muji do orange and cinnamon or smoky fireside in a tin for about £5-6

Maison margeila By the fireplace

wintersgold · 22/11/2024 00:17

Diptyque are always very good quality and long lasting candles IME, and they have a Christmas collection

PoachedScrambledBoiledFried · 22/11/2024 12:43

Bath & body works have nice candles. Currently on sale on next website! I love marshmallow fireside for Christmas/winter.
