Is this dress a bit date?

I have bought it a couple of years ago, knowing it’s on a conservative side even then. But my 25 yo DD saw it on me for the first time few months back and asked if it was Self Portrait. So, what does stylish collective make of it?

Is this dress a bit date?

It's fine. A classic silhouette. It's a 'little black dress' - they never go out of style (unless you wear it to a wedding, apparently)

@LadyMonicaBaddingham thank you. It’s dark green and I have worn it to a wedding once 😂

I can see why she thinks Self Portrait, but to my eye, the lace isn't dense enough, and the lining that gives it away as not being SP. If the lining was nude, then absolutely. Is it Whistles or Hobbs?

It's a pretty timeless dress and something that won't date. It's the perfect blank canvas for accessorising.

It's classy and timeless.

Yeah, it's a classic shift shape, neither dated nor on trend, but could be made either one by accessory and styling choices.

It looks good on the model, but I don't think it's the most flattering or interesting dress she could wear, so that's probably true of you. It's a nice colour and if it suits your colouring that might bring it up a notch. Dark green is lovely.

It could equally look very frumptastic, even though we are not allowed to say frumpy on this website, I can't remember why!

@bunnybunnybunnybunny It’s Hobbs which is why I was mindful of dated vibes, I wore a lot of their pencil dresses for work in 2010s. My wedding dress was SP with ivory lining, and you are quite right about the lace, SP really holds its shape and Hobbs dress is soft and light to wear. It’s the bodice seams that give Hobbs dress an edge.

@OnlyinBlackandWhite It really suits me, and is a little longer on me, so it helps to remove the knee-length potential frumpiness.

It's a lovely colour, and if it's a good length on you, then go for it! I wouldn't match it with green shoes though, either neutral or black, or even gold/silver depending on the event.

Agree about the shoes, green not good, I'd probably go gold/bronze or even burgundy which I think would work with the green

The fact it is longer on you probably saves it from looking dated, but in my mind it’s quite dull.

That length of dress (as it is on the model) isn’t ‘frumpy’ in my mind, but it just reminds me of the dresses every woman on The Apprentice seems to wear (with sky high heels!). I rarely see anyone else wear that length dress (or that high a heel).
