Please help me dress for this seemingly impossible event

  • Event will be second day in new job
  • No dress code provided
  • Mixed meeting (i.e. working) and Xmas do, mingling etc
  • First time meeting everyone from immediate team to big bosses
  • No idea what any previous similar events have looked like/what anyone else will wear
  • Indoor venue but will be walking/ commuting there (so need suitable footwear)
  • Very limited budget as I can't justify spending a lot for a one time wear (maybe hire something?)

I don't know where to start! I'm veering between thinking 'fuck it, I'll just be me and wear something I like, I shouldn't give too much energy to this' then back to 'it's a first impression and while it shouldn't matter it will somewhat set the tone for me in the organisation so I need to find something suitable'.

My go to would usually be fine knit jumper/blouse, wide leg trousers & flats but I'm not sure if that's going to cut the mustard this time... essentially I need something that could be looked at as 'dressy' if that's the way it goes, but also doesn't look out of place as 'professional' if that's more the tone.

Any ideas?

Hairdresser? Wine merchant? Barrister? Air traffic controller? Vicar? Butcher? Headmistress? Flower arranger?

Give us a clue …

Silk / satin blouse tucked into your wide leg trousers. Festive but easily passed off as office wear if nobody else is in the spirit the miserable buggers.

Some lovely ones around. I fancy a high neck pleat job.

Cap sleeve French Connection

Bright pink or black Warehouse

I’d probably search out emerald green or burgundy.

Wear your normal clothes but have a beautiful statement scarf and/ or pair of earrings in your best colour that you can add for the evening

also ask everyone on your first day what they will be wearing the next day

Your wide leg trousers and some metallic ankle boots? And a silky top as pp said, or a velvet top, or a velvet jacket you can quickly switch with your office blazer when you see what people are wearing.

Oliver Bonas have several nice metallic boots:

I’ve had similar and go for a nice dress, low heeled boots. Add red lipstick for the evening. Maybe a velvet blazer?

Oliver Bonas or scamp and dude for a dress.
