How to wear this?

Not this exact garment. I picked up something very similar in a charity shop ages ago. It sits at the back of the wardrobe, and every so often I pull it out, swish around in it - and put it back. I have no idea how to wear it.

Mine is flat at the back, not V like in the pic. It is a see-through fabric with opaque velvet pattern. Similar colours to the photo, maybe a little richer. The same sort of long fringing.

I'm a size 18 and I cannot wear heels.

What is the fabric?

I’d probably wear on holidays on a summer evening out

Fringes are very 'in'. Wear it with your coral or burgundy (?) trousers and a slinky top, maybe even sparkly at this time of year. Or with a short, black dress so the fringes do their thing around your legs. Pin it at the front and wear it as dress with a slip underneath. Try everything! And DEFINITELY make sure you waft a lot 😃

Picture: wafting, but not with these jeans.

Or a super-sparkly frock with waftable sleeves, be like Zandra Rhodes in her heyday 🤩 (Overwhelming eyeshadow optional)

I think this could look amazing for the party season - but I have bad form for buying something specially to go with something, then wearing it once or twice. I'll stop now, but thanks for firing my imagination!

I have something like this. I wear it on the beach or poolside or for a throw as a cardi type thing for the day to cooler evenings transition

I have a black embroidered similar item, i wear it over a plain dress or trousers and plain top. Usually black but sometimes pick out a colour in the pattern and highlight that.

Jeans, cami and cowboy boots

I love the encouragement you're getting to waft! My suggestion isn't so much what you wear with it, but just to say get on and start wearing it. You need to get used to a new item, and once you've worn it a few times you'll feel easier, more casual about it.

I'm playing dress-up when I get home!

Oh dear.

My LBD doesn’t fit. I had a lovely Little Burgundy Dress - a simple slip-style in velvet, with sparkly gold net trim - but I must have given it away, because I can’t find it. (Wouldn’t be surprised if I gave it to the charity shop at the same time as buying the swishy overthing!)

My black velvet trousers don’t fit me. My blue velvet trousers do fit me, but the colour doesn’t go with the swishy overthing. And they’re wide-legged, which detracts from the swish.

Argh. If I was even just one size down.
