Des this dress look like a nightie?

I purchased the below ghost dress but not sure ( tags still on)
I like the colour and Victorian vibe plus it's 100% cotton.
But I do have a waist and the dress doesn't!
I am thinking it will look ok once ironed, and with laced up boots... 😆 Thoughts welcome..

Looks like you belong to some weird religious sect from the 1800’s.
Sorry op think you would look better in jeans and a T-shirt.

leia24 · 18/11/2024 22:58

It looks a little bit like you're getting ready to haunt someone

Sorry but the OP's photos look like an illustration for “What I Expected Vs What I Got”.

pictoosh · 19/11/2024 10:05

I think it hangs and fits you fine...it's supposed to be floaty and loose.
I like the dress...apart from the high neck. I have tried high necks and despite having smallish boobs, they make me look matronly.

It looks fine on you...give that dress an iron, pop on some long boots and you're good to go.

Deathraystare · 19/11/2024 10:18

Hate it! The colour if flat and dull and the shape is awful.

TheLeadbetterLife · 19/11/2024 10:23

I like it, doesn't look like a nightie, and I think it hangs nicely on you.

Skybluepinky · 19/11/2024 10:40

Looks like u have bought the wrong size, far too loose.

DrZaraCarmichael · 19/11/2024 10:44

I like it! It's the wrong colour for a nightie.

Singleandproud · 19/11/2024 10:51

I'd expect it has the wrong label on if that is supposed to be an XS.
I think it will crease very easily when you sit down and be a bit of a nightmare.

If you like that style I would look at accessories on Disturbia at their belts. Whilst there is lots of goth style stuff they often have some great waist belts.

unlikelywitch · 19/11/2024 11:00

I like the bottom half but the top half, including sleeves, is ill-fitting and the colour is so drab! Defo one to return.

Mischance · 19/11/2024 11:08

I would send it back - it is too big and does not flatter you. Cotton poplin is weird stiff stuff with no flow and creases easily. A dress like that needs something floaty like cheesecloth. I would kiss it goodbye!

Calliopespa · 19/11/2024 11:17

If I’m going to be brutal: most nighties are more flattering!

The cut sits in an awkward spot. It’s shapeless and not at all responsive to your body underneath it, but also not flowing. It’s kind of “constrained” so the effect is not unlike a loaf of bread in a supermarket bakery paper bread bag.

It’s only marginally better on the model, which suggests there isn’t much scope to play with sizing, and to me it’s channelling the 70’s rather than Victoriana.

Redfox · 19/11/2024 13:17

Thank you for all your funny and frank
comments...! esp @SabreIsMyFave

The dress is XS so unable to size down.
I like the idea of the dress-wafting around in victorian regalia but it is not the best fit as so helpful pointed out Wink and will have a play around but think dress WILL BE going back...

Just as a further observation there is no inspiration on the high street with DULL things on offer and there is so much polyester, I despair!

You’ve mentioned nightie and now that’s all I can see. I’m not convinced of it on you, as others are saying you’re being drowned by a purple dress. Return IMO. There are other dresses out there for you I promise.

Singleandproud · 19/11/2024 13:42

@Redfox have you found your way to the Dark Academia thread on S&B? You may find the posters there helpful for the Victorian-esque look if that's what you are going for

CrumblyOwl · 19/11/2024 14:09

sorry but yes

AuroraBunsenBurner · 20/11/2024 11:05

I think that at this point, many of us have clean forgotten how well made clothes look, fit and feel.
I know I have almost forgotten, it sms like so very long ago.
THis dress is awful, and it really isn't you, it's the dress, 100%.
Not sure how we've come to this, but even the cheapest garment from NewLook circa 2001 was better made and fit better than most high end stuff does now.

It's criminal, since even when we can pay, we can't find the quality.

I tried on some Fjallraven trekking tights yesterday in Ambleside, home of the well made outdoor clothing world. I had some of these exact same tights back in 2019 and they were immaculate. Today's version is 'updated', the fabric is thinner, almost tearable, shiny and cheap, and the reinforced knees and bum are scratchy and badly stitched. They now want £190 for them Confused

It's impossible and depressing.
If we really step back and really LOOK at clothing now, it's a fucking disgrace.

AuroraBunsenBurner · 20/11/2024 11:10

I mean, I sometimes think it's just me, and maybe my brain is trolling me, but no one else seems to mention it much on here. Today's styles are so badly interpreted, so cheaply knocked up at all price points that I can't even be bothered shopping any more.

That dress is an abomination, not because of it's style, or whether it is dark academia, but because it is fucking terribly put together and doesn't even seem to have been designed to fit a human body. It reminds me of when you used to find an old but cheap 80's porcelain doll at a jumble sale, you know, those imitation ones that all had the same face? It looks like what those dolls would be wearing, most hideously cobbled together, shapeless and puckered and in a lurid bloody colour. It just has to 'suggest' being a garment, rather than actually 'being' one..

You deserve better op.

It would be fine if you were an eastern european peasant in the early 1900s

Nail on head. 😃
The only good thing about it is the colour. You have a great figure BTW.

Bailiwitch · 20/11/2024 11:25

Why are you shopping on the high street? Do you not have access to the internet …?

Agree! You might also like the Cabbages and Roses thread, but it has become a bit dramatic on there recently!

lollypopsforme · 20/11/2024 12:02

It looks like something from the 1900s.

Wishimaywishimight · 20/11/2024 12:05

Looks like a nightie from Little House on the Prairie!

Not very flattering and far too big on you.
