Which one(s) you have and how you describe your style?

And your age if you don’t mind?

Early 40s here and just broke out my new Virgina taupe chelsea boots for the first time today which were met with many compliments

Next pair I'm trying to decide between are the black Allyson winter grip or the black Lenore fur lined. Think I'm swaying slightly towards the Allyson but will be watching this thread with interest to help me decide!

DreamyCyanFinch · 18/11/2024 18:12

Yes, I had a pair when I was 15, and now again at 52, a pair of boots.Love them comfy and these ones are lined.

eggseggseggseggs · 18/11/2024 18:29

Are they as difficult to break in/soften Up as I've heard? I've always fancied a pair but don't want the pain of blisters

Brefugee · 18/11/2024 18:32

To break them in - very thick socks, wear them inside unlaced.

Army tip: wee in them

Alternatively: stiff with damp newspaper/rags. And as pp said, a good oiling helps

I used to wear classic docs a lot in my youth, but currently have the Alyson Wintergrip chelsea boots which are a bit less obviously DMs.

I'm mid-50s and my style is quite basic WFH scruffbag most of the time - jeans, joggers, jumpers/tees/hoodies. But if dressing up I like interesting prints and colour and would wear my DMs with a dress.

These are amazing. I also wear these. They’re so comfortable and so warm. Unlike the 1460s they were immediately comfortable- no breaking in required.

My style also pretty basic- I wear them with jeans and a jumper.

Oh, I just remembered I have a pair of baby pink patent leather 1460 but I’ve never been able to break them in which I’ve since heard is a problem with the patent ones. Can’t bear to get rid of them because they’re so cute but they’re just painful. I’ve only worn them a few times for a short amount of time.

These are the ones which broke me. I tried them on and for ten years before I gave up.

Many thanks for the tip higher up re the soft leather.

Same as others - never stopped wearing DMs! Currently have 3 pairs, all vegan canvas florals. I am fairly casual, if I dress up it's usually a shortish dress with tights and DMs if it's a pub type night out or lace up flats in winter. Live in Birkenstocks all summer. In my 40s!

I used to, in the 90s/early 2000s.

DD bought some Mary Janes a couple of years back and the buckles came off. Contacted DM, they were not helpful. Wouldn't give our money back nor offer and alternative.

Later she bought a pair of DM boots. One sole split within weeks. Again, DM were not helpful. Lesson learned there.

I would love some "bovver boots" but to get some that last now, I'd have to shell out £100s so I'm putting money aside. I like the look of Pavers, Lanx or Solivair.

YesYesAllGood · 18/11/2024 19:24

Mid 40s
Style kind of grunge/rock - dark colours, jeans men's T-shirts, cool knitwear etc.
Usually black DMs with zip up front: https://www.drmartens.com/uk/engb/1460-pascal-nappa-zip-boots-black/p/23863001?srsltid=AfmBOorNl49Ddd_wSYdcKCTNXwW7Llh93nYEz7GTUJuyLET7UQvdiuXFp

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 18/11/2024 19:33

I have quite a few pairs. I have Chelsea oxblood for everyday wear. I have sparkly pink/purple mix. I also have rainbow which were for Pride, I also have a burgundy shiny pair which are a bit too tight. I also have an another pair of brown Chelsea boots that are not as comfortable. I did have a pair of knee high ones with roses on but I gave them away because they are just too tight on my calves. I am now 49 and still love them.

autumn1610 · 18/11/2024 19:36

Got some sandals slip on double platform lived in them in the summer
pair of kids soft leather just standard back ones (if your size 5 can sometimes get some nice junior ones) they also didn’t rub my feet
dark red/purple Jadons which I’m really struggling to break in

Ooo I love these I’ve only really seen as the double sole

KirstenBlest · 18/11/2024 19:42

@TubularBeIIs , I have several pairs of Solovairs and love them. You can get them pre-loved on ebay. I got a pair of Astronaut boots recently for about £40, almost as good as new, and fit like gloves. The greasy or gaucho ones are the best ones because if you look after them they will last.
Check the size guide on the website.

BobbinThreadbare123 · 18/11/2024 19:46

I'm early 40s, goth in style. I wear Pascals which are beaten up and like slippers, and Tarik in the boot style. Got loads of clogs and sandals from DM as well. They seem to last ok but I think New Rock last longer. Harder to drive in though!

We had the opposite. DDs platform boots split after about 11 month (sole) and she got replacements within days.

Pottedshrimpy · 18/11/2024 19:54

I’ve bought my very first pair today from Vinted. Black glittery Jadons. Love them.

They feel a bit tight across the bridge so planning to wear them around the house before party season.

crackofdoom · 18/11/2024 19:54

I'm a DM returnee. Used to wear the 1460s I my youth with little dresses over leggings, and now I've got some brown Leonore Chelsea boots that I wear with....slightly less little dresses over leggings 😆. Or rolled up "Mom" jeans. Or my painty work overalls. I'm 50.

Purplecatshopaholic · 18/11/2024 19:58

Yup, guilty. Early 50s. Some green boots, pink boots and some sandals (Blaire and Voss). Voss sandals are my absolute fave, I have a few pairs in different colours.

longtompot · 18/11/2024 20:06

Black pair which are about 15 years old, I am 52 almost 53.
Not sure how to describe my style really. Comfortable?
I hadn't worn them for years but got them out of the cupboard and gave them a well needed polish and some new laces.
I've worn them mainly with jeans or occasionally with midi dresses or long skirts

DuesToTheDirt · 18/11/2024 20:27

Late 50s. I'm not going to post a picture as I've never seen another pair the same as mine, but I'll just say that they have a pattern on and I get a LOT of compliments on them - from old people, young people, men, women, friends, strangers... The last comment was the other day from a woman in her 30s, maybe, on a train.

To a PP - mine didn't need any breaking in.

FeelingSoOverwhelmed · 18/11/2024 21:32

Black classic 1460s, fur lined aimalitas, burgundy chelsea boots, burgundy lace up creepers, and some sandals.
I'm 40 and have had some form of DMs since my teens. My school shoes were DM mary janes!

My style is sort of tomboy femme I guess. Lots of cos/arket type stuff in monochrome colours. Oversized barrel leg trousers, lots of layers etc. I like strong make up and interesting jewellery and comfy shoes which is why I'm such a fan of docs.

ShyMaryEllen · 18/11/2024 21:40

I have lots of them. Sandals, Mary Janes, a knee high pair of boots and six pairs of 1460s - black and brown fur lined, embroidered, silver, rose gold and suede splodgy patterned. I rarely wear the knee ones, but the others are all year round workhorses. Since leaving work I wear them almost all the time. I'm 64.

mitogoshigg · 18/11/2024 21:45

Got a black pair of 8 holes, also got a pair of oxblood Lanx which are better made

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/11/2024 22:28

I’ve started wearing them again now they have the soft leather Virginia Pascall ones. I love them and have them in beige and black. I will never buy any that need breaking in again!

BuffyLovesSpike · 18/11/2024 22:59

I used to wear them as a student, then stopped due to boring professional career.
I'm now in my 50s and got these lilac sandals last summer and the Eviee shoes a few weeks ago. I love them both!
