Advice for styling this top, please

I've been given this top as a present. I really appreciate the thought and I've nothing against leopard print per se (I've a few bits in my wardrobe already). I can't change it and I do need to wear it at a particular event; I'm very fond of the person who gave it to me and don't want to hurt their feelings.
Sorry for the long preamble but suggestions about changing it or tactfully explaining it's not me etc really won't be useful.
The problem is that it's really quite an orange leopard print and (I'm cringing at myself writing this as it was such a kind thought) looks a bit cheap. If anyone is minded to say "It is a bit cheap" please know that it wasn't cheap for the person who bought it for me.
I've tried it with black trousers but it looks a bit harsh. I've got a few brown skirts, but I'm not sure how well they work...
Very grateful for any suggestions from the fashonistas on S&B.
Thanks in advance! 😊

It's so annoying that you can't change an opening post once it's previewed, even before posting.
I meant to add that I'll be out for quite a bit of the morning but I - like Arnie - will be back 😎

I don’t think it’s half as bad as you make it sound! Depending on the event, could it be worn over a fine black polo neck to balance out with black trousers?
or wear with a black jacket over the top to detract from any ‘orange’ tones?

Hannahandlucy · 12/11/2024 09:05

It's gorgeous. Would be lovely tucked in to some slim fitting black trousers and a nice heel.

Cuppachuchu · 12/11/2024 09:06

I'd wear a black sleeveless knitted tank top over it, so you only see the arms and collar. Sure I've seen one or two in the shops lately.

Lentilweaver · 12/11/2024 09:08

Black jacket or cardi over top. You are a kind person. It's really not terrible.

Tcateh · 12/11/2024 09:18

I really was expecting worse, the pattern is great offsetting the orangey thing you described.

I like it. Would it go with a dark grey trouser?

Ohmydears · 12/11/2024 09:20

What about toning it down with camel/tan tones? Not these exact items but you get the idea! Depends on your own style really. I would probably wear it buttoned up with a camel knitted tank/sweater vest over the top, wide leg trousers and ballet pumps as that is my style.

Sorry don't think picture posted first time.

Goodness. I don't like and have never owned animal print. I clicked on the link with trepidation expecting an unmitigated horror. It's actually rather nice. It looks more expensive than it is.

Black skirt or trousers, just about any style and material will be fine. Or a plain black pinafore dress.

LaMarschallin · 12/11/2024 12:15

Thank you so much for all the responses 😊
I feel I did make it sound worse than it - it's just it's a much brighter leopard print than I would choose myself.
Having read S&B a lot, I think I was also just trying to head off any damning comments about polyester, leopard print itself, M&S etc as I would have been quite hurt on behalf of the person who gave it to me.
I like the idea of camel tones, Ohmydears, and also the idea of perhaps wearing something under it, Bestevercatmum.
I notice it's styled with black trousers in the advert and when I initially tried that, it looked a bit bright against the black. However, a black polo neck underneath would probably balance that quite nicely.
It feels more expensive than it is too, IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle, as well as looking it.
Very grateful to people who've taken the time to reply - I knew there'd be good brains to pick here! 😊
