What boots for Europe

Bella1905 · 11/11/2024 14:07

Hi all, I will be travelling in Europe for about 10 days in December and won't be able to pack much so was thinking since it will be very cold or just wearing one pair of boots the whole time. I want something practical and comfortable that is ideally at least a little stylish too but I don't know where to start. Does anyone have any recommendations? Perhaps walking boots but I don't want something heavy. Many thanks

I have winter boots with non slip bottoms, useful for Finland not so much for the Côte d'Azur - how cold is it likely to be?

Pieceofpurplesky · 12/11/2024 18:02

I love fitflop boots and have some similar to this (although if you are a size 3 the boots I have are on eBay brand new - not mine!)

If it's going to be icey/snowy I'd recommend dr martens 1460 wintergrip blizzard, love mine for winter fleece lined, waterproof and anti slip sole.
Solovair are also great boots, I have the 8 eye derby and they are very comfortable.

Europe is vast. Where are you going? A trip to the Scottish Highlands will require vastly different footwear to Lanzarote.

A trip for walking in the Scottish Highlands will require different footwear than a city break to Edinburgh !

Fair point but I was trying to show extreme differences 🤣

Thanks @helpmyback. I had admired these too funnily enough but wondered if the white sole might show up a lot of dirt. How do you find them? Thanks

Thanks all. No I'm not American, and we will be travelling through France, The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. Really appreciate all the responses. I saw these this evening online and really like them if anyone knows where they are from...

weather wise it will be pretty similar to the uk right now in those countries.

Not that I have noticed. I'll have look tomorrow as they are not a home. I have worn them on city breaks to York and Prague.

Definitely more of a city boot!

Thick soles and lined if you are heading north/east. It is a different level of cold and radiates out of the pavements.

Mummyoflittledragon · 13/11/2024 00:00

Something warm with a good sole grip op. The winter months in inland Northern Europe are colder in those countries than the UK. I’ve lived in 3 of the 4. It can snow a lot in Germany in December, mostly in the south.

ForGreyKoala · 13/11/2024 00:28

Another vote for Blundstones. Comfortable straight out of the box, light, and with a good sole for icy conditions.

They might be these Max Mara boots.

i had a pair of those and although they are a sleeker take on the DM boot, the quality is not great. The soles were not at all durable.
I'd get a pair of Solovairs instead (which is exactly what I did).
NPS Solovair | Womens Boots, Shoes & Loafers | Made in England – Tagged "Boot" – NPS Solovair UK
A big plus is that they do half-sizes and cover a wide range of sizes (3-13 in many styles)

I have no affiliation with the company other than I own several pairs of their shoes.

Second this....Don't buy DM's which are made in China since the company was sold.
Solovair made in UK by same workers that used to make DM's.

Ditch Chinese goods asap.....airmiles, climate change and v shady working practices to name just a few reasons.

Whatever you go for, I’d recommend a pair of felt insoles - they make a huge difference to your warmth when walking around outside all day. Available on eBay/Amazon/various independent websites.

Bella1905 · 13/11/2024 13:16

Thanks all. Some brilliant ideas. And thank you @JustJazzy for finding the boots. Slightly out of my price range sadly, ha.

Or sheepskin insoles, last year they were £15 from Celtic, and made a pair of my boots feel like new again.

I live in germany - not far from the Dutch border - whatever boots you'd wear in the Uk are fine for here, if you're heading further south you might (only might) need something warmer - but generally your regular autumn/winter boots will be fine
