I'm packing to move and I have only these coats and jackets. It really did look pitiful!

Short unlined wool look beige coat from TU
Ancient denim jacket
Velvet blazer*
Jersey blazer for work

Long rab down
Short Oex puffer*
North face waterproof
Short North face fleece
North face light weight hooded short coat

If they serve your lifestyle then I think you are fine.

Lentilweaver · 10/11/2024 16:57

I have fewer. Whats pathetic about it?

henlake7 · 10/11/2024 17:09

Even people who have closets full of coats probably only ever wear the same 5-10!

Zebracat · 10/11/2024 17:11

I was thinking about this today. The right amount of coats/ clothing is the amount you have room for. We have pathetic downstairs coat hanging provision, so I keep some upstairs, but they don’t get used. I have a long dog walking coat, Scandi rubber Mac, newish light weight navy coat. oldish green jacket, cream fleece, brown cord jacket, denim jacket and 2 big coats , 1 orange, 1 blue. Oh and a grey jersey blazer I’ve never worn. That’s 10, maybe 2 too many. I’m struggling to visualise your coats, op, but it doesn’t sound too few, just that maybe none of them make your heart sing? A problem for me is that I never know whether to ditch the well worn shabby ones that are clearly functional, or the pristine rarely used ones that maybe aren’t.

Farmgoose · 10/11/2024 17:12

I don’t think of blazers and denim jackets as coats.
You have enough casual coats for all weathers. Maybe a smart one missing. Maybe a smart long dark coat? Formal occasions and funerals etc.

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 10/11/2024 17:13

I don't know what's pitiful about "only" 9 coats. However, I would say from your list that you appear to basically buy a lot of a couple of particular styles, so maybe don't have many options to cover different situations. I don't have 9, but I do have something to cover pretty much all occasions.

Fireworknight · 10/11/2024 17:19

My first thought is that smarter coat is missing. They all seem practical.

I have
Warm, quilted long jacket
Biker jacket
Waterproof light walking jacket x 2
Lighter padded jacket
Dog walking fleece
Funeral coat

I feel I need an everyday, mid- thickness coat

summer jackets - linen, denim etc
blazers

plus some I can’t get into at the moment 😟

(I love coats)

Doingmybest12 · 10/11/2024 17:24

What else do need?

Bizarred · 10/11/2024 17:25

You need a smart black coat (for funerals and other important occasions).

I have:

Smart black coat
Cheap faux fur for going out at Christmas time
White raincoat
Black anorak-type thing
Padded long coat for standing around in play parks
Short padded jacket
Ancient duffle coat but haven't worn that in years

Then I sometimes borrow my DC's short waterproof that we bought for Duke of Edinburgh.

mondaytosunday · 10/11/2024 17:34

I have one down coat when it gets really cold (often it's not in London). A wool cape. A shower jacket. That's it. Generally just wear a long cardi with shawl scarf if temp dips.
My 19 year old also has: one wooden jacket, one down jacket, another she's had since she was 12 which still fits her, one waterproof jacket.

GoldenLegend · 10/11/2024 17:40

I've got:

unlined waterproof Seasalt navy
lined waterproof Seasalt khaki
lined waterproof M&S navy*
short quilted jacket navy
lined beige summer jacket
wool short coat M&S navy
vicuna Hobbs black

So that's seven. I wear all of them except the one starred because the sleeves are not lined and my arms get cold in it. I think if you wear all your coats and never find you haven't got the right coat for what you are doing, you should be fine.

helpmyback · 10/11/2024 18:19

I did think I'm a shacket and a going out coat. I do love the summer quilted jackets of late summer

My husband has a lot more than I do

By pitiful I mean the merge amount in a box.

They were in the coat wardrobe. When I took mine out it was still full.

That’s quite a lot!

I think the maximum I would have:
Smart coat
Warm winter coat
Lighter coat for autumn
Waterproof coat (although the last two could be waterproof)
