Help! How to style a suede mini skirt?

DieDreiHexen · 06/11/2024 06:52

I've just bought this gorgeous skirt. It's flattering and feels lovely, even though I'm more broiler hen than spring chicken (46, size 12, nice legs) I've wanted a suede skirt for about 25 years and finally can afford it and am not parenting young children!

Any thoughts on how to style it, top to bottom. What footwear would work well? Tights colour? Jumpers or shirts, tucked on out?

So far, I've managed a cream silk short (nice enough) and a black polo neck (worked well) Not confident about boots/ shoes though.

Omg that is simply gorgeous!!! I was looking myself but bit out of my price range! Good for you for getting it ! I'm similar size etc to you! I just bought a red tartan skirt...
Black polo perfect, also black scoop neck ribbed top?
I would do low dernier black tights and black boots? Ankle boots would also work ?
Cream cardigan as per the model too would look good with brown boots. Argh I want this skirt now!

hideawayforever · 06/11/2024 07:25

I would probably wear a black crew neck plain jumper, black tights and black knee high boots

Angelofmycoins · 06/11/2024 07:36

I have a simiilar one and I wear it with an ultra thin roll-neck long-sleeve top. Perhaps with horizontal stripes.
I like the contrast of a luxe fabric with the suede. Dark colour for winter.

Black tights, highly opaque. What boots do you have? Try a few on, but you can go short or long, mid length.... whatever you like. Chunky for day, delicate for evening

In summer, of course they looks lovely with t shirts and sandals/veja trainers

GettingStuffed · 06/11/2024 08:47

I think you can't go wrong with a sweater and boots, a bit like how they've styled it in the photo.

Doggymummar · 06/11/2024 13:25

Dull, but I would style like the picture as I am scared to do my own thing.

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/11/2024 13:27

Looks great in the pic I think, so I’d do similar with light brown/beige knee boots and a cream sweater. Or all black like pp said.

Christine1998 · 06/11/2024 13:34

Lovely skirt, unfortunately out of my price range, i have similar cheaper faux suede. I style mine with a black fitted high neck top, black opaques and black block heel ankle boots, or for a more casual feel, black or natural chunky jumper, opaques and flat black chelsea/chunky boots

wintersgold · 06/11/2024 13:42

A chunky cashmere sweater? Would be a nice contrast and make a classy autumn look

LemonTT · 06/11/2024 15:54

Be guided by your body shape. A line skirts provide balance to anyone with broad shoulders and bust. They are usually best styling with something that is fitting. Like a snug fitting jumper.

If your top half is slighter than your top half then add volume to the top. Something loose or bulky which is belted or tucked in. Equally something with bat wings or wide shoulders that tapers to the waist.

I wouldn’t wear anything hip length that is loose and wide.

whatever boots or shoes you suit your legs. Or you have. Given the season this cries out for longer boots

autumn1610 · 06/11/2024 18:02

I have a similar one and wear with black tights and usually a long sleeve black tshirt/polo neck jumper or go with white but the same and keep it simple

DieDreiHexen · 06/11/2024 18:08

Thank you. There are some great ideas here. I bought a cream cashmere lightweight jumper last year and will try that. I've also got some brown chunky boots to try.

I would go for a black cashmere polo and maybe flat ballerinas or, yes longer boots. I LOVE the skirt! I have been looking at mini tartan skirts, as a way to revisit 1994...

WhatterySquash · 06/11/2024 20:15

Ooohhhh this brings back memories of a suede mini I had in the fabulous 90s! (Not suggesting it's out of date at all though - it's v. in, and beautiful)

I'd wear with fitted, long sleeved merino jersey top like this:
https://www.arket.com/en_gbp/women/tops/product.long-sleeved-merino-top-grey.0630664047.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=FF%7Eallcustomers_CN%7Epmax_AN%7Earket_PR%7Emix_MK%7Egb_PL%7Egoogle-ads_TT%7Emixed_CU%7Egbp_PH%7Econversion&utm_id=20327817100&gclid=CjwKCAiAxKy5BhBbEiwAYiW--1PJJ64Jq9J8gddWWkyeLtV4eYOhP9GSHN48S5m1hTk5Rjgv4xAUCRoCC0gQAvD_BwE

I also like the model's little cropped cardigan with it.

Barney16 · 06/11/2024 20:28

Thick black tights, short black chunky sweater, black boots. Possibly I would swop the black sweater for cream. I bought the Rita Ora cropped sweater from Primark and it's brilliant. Complete bargain. Or as someone has said, fitted merino long sleeve top. It's a lovely skirt.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/11/2024 20:30

Fitted polo with any sleeve length. A polo vest would look great.

Knee high boots and tights.

EveryOtherNameTaken · 06/11/2024 20:30

Polo neck btw not polo shirt 😂

Apileofballyhoo · 06/11/2024 20:38

I used to have two, a red one and a pink one, no idea why I charity shopped them but I did. I wore mine with knee boots I had that were also suede, and a black silk floral cut on the bias top. I think a chunky Mary Jane could look good. I like the idea of both a chunky polo, maybe cropped and a skinny rib polo. I think that style of skirt is kind of chunky and wide and looks well with a narrow or fitted top, it's like flared or loose jeans, you want the top more fitted or cropped.

ThatBeachLyfe · 07/11/2024 13:51

Would look gorge with a fair isle jumper with similar tones in it!

boygirlcatdog · 07/11/2024 14:25

Following as I've also succumbed to one (not as nice or expensive as the MV one though!!)

Kipsmum · 07/11/2024 16:02

I had something very similar back in the 70sin my teens. Wore it with a skinny rib top like this:

There's nice detailing on the skirt so I'd want the skirt to be the star of the show and keep the top simple. In those days I would have teamed it with knee-high brown boots with a three-inch stack heel and a platform, but I can see almost any kind of boot working with it. In those days it would have been sheer tan tights for the winter (before opaques were readily available) but if that feel too cool for winter days I'd try opaques. Probably dark brown. Have fun: happy days. Couldn't dream of wearing anything like it now!

Knee high black boots, opaque black tights and a fairisle jumper with some tan in it.

DrRichardWebber · 07/11/2024 21:11

This is beautiful, do you have it already? Is it a proper A line?

Skule · 07/11/2024 22:05

in contrast to all the black recommendations, I'd recommend chocolate brown or olive green. With suede, I especially like textural differences - something like this silk shirt or a knitted collared top like this or this.
