Skinny jeans/jeggings...I only just got the memo!

So apparently they're more yesterday than Hallowe'en. I'm not happy about this as I find them a) incredibly comfortable and b) easy. I'm mid-fifties and a size 20-22, good legs and not a bad bum, but I do boast a hateful tummy. I don't want to look like an ageing rhino dressed as a spring turnip, but equally, I do like to look like I've made half an effort.

What jeans can I wear to suit my age and all the above lumps and bumps? I do have some wide legged ones, but I can't bear the thick, rigid denim that so often seems to come with this style. The same seems to apply to 'Mom' styles. I will carry on with my beloved, stretchy skinnies for pootling around the house and supermarket days, but I'd like something a little more adventurous for casual days and evenings out. I know which tops I feel work with skinny jeans, but I seem to struggle with tops for other styles - I prefer a longer length top to cover my tum, but feel they look vaguely daft with wide legged jeans.

As an aside, it's been the most horrendous of years for me. I've spent the last 2 years caring for live-in elderly parents whilst juggling full time work, and sadly my Mum passed away earlier this year, closely followed by Dad only a few weeks later. A matter of weeks after Dad's death and I was in hospital undergoing major by-pass surgery for blocked arteries. Recovery from this whilst grieving for my lovely parents was long and hard. Only now am I starting to find my feet again, and I'm dismayed at how much social confidence I've lost over the year. I have gained weight due to being far more inactive than usual, I feel older than I've ever felt and I know I look it. I'm trying to embrace going out and socialising to rediscover some 'me' time, but I feel so self-conscious just lately.

I would be really grateful for any advice on how to put a look together, particularly with regards to jeans or trousers as that's what I'm most at ease in.

TIA for any hints or tips!

Skinny jeans and knee boots are looking fresh right now

Second that, skinny jeans are back on trend, they were out for probably 5-10 years but heating up right now.

However, why do you care, just wear whatever you look good in. Dress to flatter your body shape and feel good and comfortable, not because someone has decided they need to shift x units of a particular product and got all the magazines to go along with it.

I hired a stylist this week and she said that the secret to wearing skinny jeans is as follows:

Great ankle boots, perhaps with a neutral (camel/cream) sock over the top
Wear a white/ivory cami top that is longer than the top you wear over it.
A crisp shirt over the cami, buttoned in the middle with one or two buttons so you see the cami top above and below
Or a fitted long-sleeved top (not slouchy, arm seams at the shoulder not halfway down the arm) with a v-neck if you have big boobs, in a great colour over the cami, with the cami adding a pop of white/ivory at the cleavage and white/ivory a good 2-3 inches below the top - ruche the top below the waist line.

This transformed my look with skinny jeans and is very comfy.

M and S magic jeans in the straight leg have worked well for me recently. Now off to read the entire thread. I'm a 20 and 5 foot 3 inches.

Wide leg jeggings are a thing,

My fat knees are delighted to not wear skinny jeans.

The stretchy Lycra in these is fantastic for hiding your tummy and shaping your bum.

They're the ones I have.

Wear the skinnies. They'll have to prise them off my cold, hard body.

Thanks everyone. I'm sticking with my skinnies. I work on the theory that if I feel ok and comfortable, then I hope I look it!

That’s a good theory. And I did have a friend say the other day that her high waisted wide legs need replacing as that look is getting a bit “ tired” . I think it is actually not a flattering look for many figures so won’t stick round that long. Hang tight op! We’re all coming round to your side again!

That was actually quite a vivid image …

Where what you like OP, if they suit you and you're comfortable in them it's a win win.

The Princess of Wales still wears them so they can't be that bad 🙂

For some reason I read that as Diana and had a very flummoxed moment.

Thanks for the replies today. I've had a chuckle at some of them too, so that's a bonus!
