Christmas Party, what to buy that won't be a one wear item?

The last 4 years I have alternated 2 dresses, I can't carry on with that. One navy velvet and one black spotty voile if that's the right word.

If I buy something partyish I won't get wear out of it but also don't want to look like I'm going into the office.

I never seem to get it right, I spend on things I rarely wear again.

I'm a size 16 apple with horrible knees and corned beef arms :-D.

How do others deal with this? Thanks

Plain black dress with a little sequin jacket over it? Could wear the jacket with jeans to the pub too.

Or new jeans and vest with sequin jacket or an All Saints kimono?

Accessories can make a big difference. I like a bit of costume jewellery to jazz things up - statement earrings or necklace. I wear a lot of black so I also like glittery tights at Xmas - bit of fun, not expensive, Christmassy without being too OTT

Kayemm · 31/10/2024 22:59

I love that black dress, exactly the same style as the two that I alternate...

Thank you so much though.

It's not a jeans do, it's sequin skirts and sparkly trousers do, I'd be out of place in jeans.

I don’t see any harm in throwing yourself into the spirit of things, and then wearing your party outfit to death on every possible occasion. Have a look at:

Zara, (special editions and footwear)
Wyse (gold or silver skirts)
Klements (pure silk dresses)
Wiggy Kit (majestic dresses and separates)

for something up to date but individual, whatever your budget.

Although, if you’re sure you want something for just a single wear, you might do better to hire:

Sequin mini skirt. Great to dress up or to wear with a slouchy jumper and boots at other times.

AndThereSheGoes · 01/11/2024 08:44

I bought a black velvet jumpsuit ( from Asda but recommended on here). Its been brilliant.

Great for parties before, during and after Christmas as it's not overly Christmasy but can be with a sequin jacket or belt. Also looks good at dinners out whether pub meals or nice restaurants. I can wear my DMs with it or heeled sandals. Both look great.
Even better the velvet doesn't crease so it's been abroad a lot and it's saved time when I just need something in a hurry.

Sequin t shirt, nice jeans, velvet jacket. You'll get years of wear out of them, have a look in Sainsbury.

That jumpsuit looks lovely 😍

Shamelessly jumping on here to say thank you - I've just ordered the Roman dress!

I have a black velvet skirt which is perfect for Christmas - dress it up with boots/heels or make it a little more casual with flats. I've worn it with a dark green blouse, a red blouse, a black sequin top, a silk top which has muted yellow/black/chocolate tones. All have looked suitably festive and dressy.

AllTangledUpInTinselAndTiaras · 01/11/2024 09:11

Ohhhhhh yes love a jumpsuit. A velvet jumpsuit is even better!

I think you should hit the charity shops for their party wear. I have literally worn the same sequin skirt two years in a row and will be wearing it again without any hesitation that was bought from a charity shop. You can then wear it throughout the season and donate again if you want.

Great suggestion. We even have a charity shop near us who will keep an eye out for specific brands/items and let you know when something comes in.

I have a pair of velvet trousers that I wear throughout the festive season, I just change the tops for each event. I have a green satin shirt, a red cashmere jumper and too many black tops to go with it.
I go bling with the shoes and nails, jewellery and I have a huge bright red shawl/wrap thingy to go with it.

Agree that something partyish on the bottom and then change up the tops. I have three partying skirts that have been standbys for the last 10 years or so. All from charity shops.

  1. brocade midi (gold, red, black)
  2. navy sequin midi
  3. black velvet pencil midi

As PP said, for a party I wear them with a suitable silk blouse, heels and as much bling as I fancy (or a strong red lip). For daytime and office, I wear 1) and 3) with black cashmere crew necks or polonecks and much more sedate jewellery.
