Black tie date with a short man

I very very rarely wear heels these days and would much prefer that was never, so it's possible I may be using him as an excuse 🤣

I find black tie difficult. For women it seems to range from fairly ordinary party dress to full on ball gown and I never know which kind I'm going to. This is a very much working class affair, but I suspect that means it might be extra glam?

I have a long silk dress I plan to wear. I'm not sure most will be in long dresses, but I like this dress and I'm not buying anything new.

I usually wear it with heels, but I'm thinking on this occasion flat silver sandals...or will I look like I'm going to the beach?

To me sandals read as more casual. Personally, if I wasn't wearing heels I'd go for a pointed toe flat. I know these have a tiny heel, but maybe something like this?

Is he an insecure short man?

StillAtTheRestaurant · 31/10/2024 12:13

Sorry, is it a problem if your heels make you taller than your date? Confused

Comedycook · 31/10/2024 12:14

I wore flat gold sandals with a long dress to a black tie event.... only because I can no longer bear a single minute in heels 😂

You could maybe go for a kitten heel? Or stick with the sandals or maybe glam pointy flats?

No, but I feel huge and awkward with him sometimes. It's not him that makes me feel awkward, but I suppose the cultural norm that it's unusual to see a woman taller than "her" man. It might make no sense, but it's how it feels.

Plus I just don't like wearing heels , and that predates him.

I'll be taller than my date in flats!

Its very common on the red carpet for female celebs to be a few inches taller than their partners because of their heels! Smile

Nice, dressy, strappy sandals are fine and what I wear because I cannot stand (pun intended) heels!

TianasBayou · 31/10/2024 12:54

Wear what you like. Your partner's height is immaterial.

Sorry just seen this. I think towering over him might be a bit much, but sandals don't sound appropriate at all. You should be dressing for the event first, factoring in your date second. Id have to experiment with various heels and try and wear the smallest possible that worked for the event tbh.

RedPalace · 31/10/2024 13:02

Flat sling back shoes are very fashionable these days and would work with a lot of dresses

Ganni flats are often quoted but they are expensive, lots of dupes on ASOS

BilboBlaggin · 31/10/2024 13:02

I get it OP. I dated a man for a little while who was about an inch shorter than me when we were barefoot. If I wore anything with a heel it was worse. He was a very small build overall and I'm slightly overweight, so I felt like one of those old beach postcard couples 🤣

I do think flat open sandals can seem a bit beach wear. The pp suggestion above of a kitten heel could be a good compromise.

The OP doesn’t want to wear heels though. Heels are not mandatory for any dress code and certainly not required to look smart.

Something like the attached would be absolutely fine and is practically the same as many styles of heels which will be worn apart from having no heels!

Yeah, as others say, there are some really cute flats that are smarter than a sandal. With a nice pointy toe, or just a small heel of a couple of inches. Hopefully you'll be sitting down a lot of the time so your height discrepancy with your partner won't be glaringly obvious. I think when women are all in high heels they often look the same height or a little taller than a lot of the men. I mean, I could wear a heel and be 5'10, which is above average height for a man.
I hope you can relax and enjoy the event without worrying about how tall your bloke looks.

The ones I have are similar to these but with silver edging to the sole
