Nail split really far down - what can I do??

Somehow caught a nail and it's started to rip about half way down the nail bed!! If it rips further or if I try to cut it at the rip it will be excruciating.

Currently got a plaster on it to stop it catching - do I just have to wear a plaster until it's grown out enough to cut or is there any magic product that can help???

I bought some nail glue recently. Have a Google, that may hold things together until it grows out.

FusionChefGeoff · 30/10/2024 09:33

@Farfarout has it worked for you??

This happened to my toenail and I went to a nail bar and they magically recreated a toenail out of some gunge (sorry I am not sure what it was, gel? acrylic?) it lasted until the toenail regrew and it was brilliant!

I get a tissue and separate the ply. Cut it down with nail scissors then wet it, cover the split and then go over it with clear Polish a couple of times. Will secure until the split grows out.

You can try cutting the edge of a teabag and pasting it over the rip with nail glue, then cover with polish, ideally gel as it’s more hard wearing.

Or you can try dip powder, Cristine of Simplynailogical on YouTube did that when she had a far down break.

I'd go to a nail salon.

I use brush on nail glue and make sure it sort of seeps into the crack. Tissue/tea bags etc. never last for me.

I’ve done this successfully before. It doesn’t look pretty, but it will stop the agony of it ripping right across.

Thanks all I'll try the tissue trick first

I used superglue. Worked ok!

FictionalCharacter · 01/11/2024 11:28

Mine do this a lot. It really hurts! Ordinary superglue fixes it. Drip it on the tear, let it run underneath and carefully wipe off any big blobs. It stops it hurting too. It goes brittle and needs renewing every few days but it works.
Then when the nail has grown long enough, cut and file it really short until it’s grown out properly.
