Cold weather airport clothes

So I have the usual airport wear down to an art - linen trousers, white tee, denim jacket, trainers. Simple, comfortable, relatively stylish.

But no idea how to change that to a January trip! All suggestions gratefully received.

I wore thermal leggings, long hoodie and a puffer coat that was squishy enough to go in my bag.

Uniqlo puffer coat that goes to nothing.

maxi dress with an empire line waist. Underneath I wear leggings and poss even a thermal vest. Cardi on top. Thermals and leggings come off during the flight and I land in Thailand in a maxi dress and trainers.

Are you flying to a hot or cold destination?

If going to hot, we do valet parking, leave coats in the car for when we get back, and wear usual clothes, with a thin cashmere cardi. It's not cold in the airport.

If going to cold, wide leg ponte trousers, long sleeve tshirt, lightweight puffa and boots.

Cold - NY.

I can’t do leggings, I have short fat legs that just can’t make them work!

@honeyandbutterontoast the leggings are under the dress so no one sees them.

Just to say OP, if you're going in the next few days, it's going to be very warm 22-24c weds - fri and then again same time next week. I am leaving NY today after a week here, it's been mostly warm or mild with a couple of chillier days only.

Last year I bought this jacket. I was going from Dec London to a hot country though. The jacket is warm, especially when layered with scarf/tops etc, but small enough to pack into a small pocket if needed .

No it’s Jan I am going so I’m pretty sure it will be cold!

Recommendations for any stylish cold weather clothes also gratefully received. I run on the cold side and am travelling with DD who can throw on a sack and look good! Ah to be young 😂

If it's a January trip, I would dress much like you do in UK, but leave a bit of room to layer. Pack a hat and gloves.
Coats are a pain in the neck to pack, and hot to drag around an airport. Try to find a light but warm coat or jacket, and if you are bringing boots, wear them to travel since they take up more space.

Depending on what you are doing and how much time you spend outdoors, pack thermals and warm socks.

Also, here's a good article about winter packing. Even if you don't like the individual items (no shiny leggings for me), you can use it for ideas. It includes some dressier outfits for dinner or theatre evenings.

Last year I went from a cold Britain to the Carribbean and back. I wore a long t shirt dress with sports leggings underneath and a neoprene hoodie plus a scarf. If you're going cold to cold I'd suggest trousers, a thin jumper and a puffer jacket.

MissHalloween · 29/10/2024 21:02

I wear a tracksuit from Mango and put a puffa jacket in my case and wear that once I’ve got my luggage.

The airport at JFK is boiling hot. Honestly the queue to get through immigration was hellish as it was so warm so don’t wear a lot of clothes. Also NY is a funny place. When we went in a February 5 out of our 7 days was shorts and t shirts weather. The other 2 were like a cold crisp day here in the UK. All the thermals and boots we bought were a waste of money.

Layers when travelling anywhere cold. Scarf is useful, as is uniqlo puffer but you might need a bigger jacket for when in NY. (I like to cover at least bum when it gets really cold)
