Easy hair curler

HelloCheekyCat · 28/10/2024 20:15

Hi all, DD has requested something to curl her hair for Christmas & I don’t know where to start.
I can’t curl her hair with straighteners & she has a lot of hair so it would take me ages anyway.
Is that what an Dyson Air Wrap is? Are there any dupes which are any good?! I can’t justify spending £400+ unfortunately!

Zero need for the Dyson airwrap. What is your budget, roughly? Whatever it is, there’ll be a decent hair curler you can get for it.

HelloCheekyCat · 28/10/2024 20:23

Probs £75-100, ideally less than £100 if poss 😀

You could get a really good one for that. My personal opinion is you don’t need to spend so much. Will she be bothered about the brand? I’d get something like this. John Lewis have price matched that one but I can’t get the link to work.

Aworldofmyown · 28/10/2024 20:36

How long and thick is her hair?

HelloCheekyCat · 28/10/2024 20:57

@MiddleParking that looks relatively easy, I think I could do the back & DD to do the front 😃
@Aworldofmyown it’s down to her bra, it’s not mega thick luckily but there just seems to be loads of it

I don't know if they'll still have them but I have a curler from primark which is really good. It's angled, I found it so much easier to use than a straight one and certainly burn myself a lot less

mdinbc · 28/10/2024 21:24

Can she practice at a friend's or at a hairdresser? Some people prefer a clamp style, others prefer a wand with no clamp. Babyliss is a good brand.

Tillytess · 28/10/2024 21:36

I have thick straight shoulder length hair and have tried all sorts to achieve a curl or wave. I have a collection of discarded gadgets as a testament to my hair styling incompetence. I haven’t tried the Dyson airwrap as too expensive to risk it. However, I recently got one of these and it works! Even for me

How about some silk heatless haircurlers? They work really well on my daughters hair.

dontdivorceoverchacha · 28/10/2024 21:55

Babyliss hair curler. I have bra strap length hair. Takes less than 10mins and they last for a couple of days. I'm crap at doing hair, you drape a bit of hair over it, squeeze, it sucks the hair in and comes out curly. Amazing 🤩

bryceQ · 28/10/2024 23:08

I have waist length hair and the heatless curlers you use at night have made my hair absolutely beautiful I'm addicted to them! No heat. Last ages.

These type ones

This is super easy to use. Just put a strand in the opening and press a button, it curls it around and get lovely waves or curls. Worth looking up tutorials online on YouTube etc. to get an idea. (Better on longer hair rather than short-mid length I think) www.boots.com/revamp-progloss-hollywood-automatic-rotating-hair-curler-10283609

MiddleParking · 29/10/2024 03:47

I would consider asking your daughter before getting her the type that sucks the hair in. In my opinion they’re not as versatile as a styler compared to a wand. They’re incredibly easy to use if she’s a beginner though.

BobAintMyUncle · 29/10/2024 08:26

I think the Mark Hill Pick N Mix range is great. They do an attachment with a longer, thinner barrel which is perfect for “longer” hair. Takes under 30 minutes for me to curl my waist-length medium-thickness hair.

For my niece’s birthday, I bought her the Mark Hill wand & a Boots voucher so she could choose her own attachment.

Babyliss do great tools too.

Ketryne · 29/10/2024 09:50

I really recommend the Cloud Nine curling wand. I'm hopeless at styling hair and can't make straighteners work as curlers to save my life, but this is foolproof even for me and I get really lovely curls. I've got the micro wand because my hair is fairly fine but the bigger one would probably suit your daughter better - www.cloudninehair.com/products/curling-wand

When I was younger GHD was THE unbeatable brand for hair products and I think Cloud Nine were founded by the original makers of GHD so definitely good quality and good tech. You literally just wrap the hair around the ceramic barrel, hold it for a few seconds and let go.

spreadbedcandlewick · 29/10/2024 09:56

I was always afraid to curl my hair having seen too many people singe their hair off on videos.

I booked in with my normal hairdresser who knows my hair, she taught me to curl my hair using a curling wand in my 40s. That way I knew what temperature for my hair and how many seconds to leave it on the wand for. Also what thickness of hair sectioning. I think she charged me £10 for the session. This meant I could see what sized barrel suited my style.

When I was at home I tried the technique with the curling wand unplugged so I could position my hands etc then I did it with the hot curling wand.

I do have a Dyson airwrap and although it is good it makes my hair a bit frizzy, not just the curled part but the bit above when the air is blowing on it.

RevelryMum · 29/10/2024 10:00

Dyson are not worth the money pile of S* if you ask me , get her to learn how to use the straighteners loads of tutorials on YouTube it's very fast and easy once you master it o never use anything else now .

Ebananascroogey · 29/10/2024 13:04

I had one of the Babyliss sucky in curlers & ended up with the most random sticky outy curls that looked awful.
I replaced it with a Beachwaver & it is honestly the best, easiest to use curler I have ever had!

I can’t recommend one like in this photo enough.
have a slightly different version, I have bra strap length hair and can curl my hair in seven minutes.
It lasts all day and the next day is wavy. I pin half my hair up and go all around my hair with the curler. Then I unpin my hair and go around the top layer. I turn my hair upside down, hairspray it and then gently tease it to how I want it

The babyliss secret air is very good, and easy to use. It's over budget at the moment but may be worth waiting to see if there are any black Friday deals next month?

I don't know what kind of curls your daughter wants but I have a beachwaver and it's been a game changer for me. It's basically a tong that automatically curls your hair for you without having to twist things round yourself. It's the easiest thing to use imo, but take a tip from me - don't buy the very pale baby pink one as it looks like a giant dildo and is embarrassing to use or bring out anywhere haha.

Thanks everyone for the recommendations, PIL ended up buying DD the revamp automatic curler. DH did her hair initially then DD has been practising doing it herself & is now curling MIL’s 🤩
