Who remembers the Braun Independent Styler?

Did you have one? I LOVED it, worked really well on my hair. It all seems to be hot air stylers now.

I was musing about this this morning when I was using my Revlon One Step.

Why do they stop making really good stuff? ( I still haven't forgiven L'Oréal for discontinuing the blue anti dandruff shampoo!)

I think I’ve still got mine in the loft…might try and find it. The smell was distinctive as you all say! 😂
i went full 1985 and had a perm this year, that still smells the same too…was like a Time Machine!

Actually, was that not the Martini advert?

Yes that was Martini 😂

Cuppachuchu · 28/10/2024 13:35

This has made me think of that lovely Vidal Sassoon almondy shampoo and conditioner, fantastic stuff, and also sadly discontinued 😢

I loved that!

Here's the advert!

I went through several of these when I was younger. I bought a new one from Boots last year in a fit of nostalgia and it's great. However it gets so very very hot so I rarely use it as think it probably trashes your hair. You can usually get the refill gas canisters from Argos. 😀

JoJothegerbil · 28/10/2024 14:59

I still have mine too somewhere. I ought to dig it out and see if it still works.

ODFOx · 28/10/2024 15:07

'Surely you can no longer get the gas canisters?'

Before Braun started making the plug in gas canisters, you used to be able to refill the hair tongs with butane in the same way as a cigarette lighter. So, if anyone still has one of the early ones they can be filling it up forever using aerosol cans from the cigarette shop. You couldn't refill the removable canisters as they were actually pierced during the fitting process.

"Braun Independent- Beautiful Hair.. Anywhere!"

That was the jingle that I have dragged out of the back of my brain.

I must ask my mum where she gets her stash of canisters from.. 🤔

OhhHii · 28/10/2024 13:55

I still have my one 😂

Me too, in its box!

They were the ultimate Christmas gift at the time. I bought my mum one and she loved it.

In the brown bottles? Loved it.

BestIsWest · 28/10/2024 16:38

Yes! I loved mine. It was revolutionary back in the 80s. Used to fill it with cigarette lighter fluid. It was so handy. I remember being in the loos at work before the Christmas do, all of us doing our hair with them.

suburburban · 28/10/2024 16:39

Yes I wish I'd never given mine away, had them in a drawer for years

ForPearlViper · 28/10/2024 16:47

Cuppachuchu · 28/10/2024 13:39

Yeah, agreed. Tressy was never the same with a pixie cut. Poor Tressy.

I know from experience they lied when they said her hair grew. What child wouldn't want to gain empirical proof of that with a stolen pair of scissors? It reminds me of my sister's walking doll who only walked if you kicked her left leg.

I digress. I remember them. One of the many things that I tried on my puffy hair before I discovered the holy grail of the new generation of ceramic straighteners.
They were an experience for all the senses. The second degree burns, the hiss of your hair melting, the smell of burning hair, etc, etc.

imnottoofussed · 28/10/2024 16:47

I loved mine it used to curl my bob under nicely.

I once got my spare canister confiscated at the airport though as I didn't know you couldn't bring it in hand luggage.

Then I had to bin it as it stopped igniting.

Freemanhardyandwillis · 28/10/2024 17:51

I actually won one in a magazine competition! (One of the few things I have ever won). It was brilliant and I only threw it away last year because I thought you couldnt get the canisters anymore - dammit!

suburburban · 28/10/2024 19:16

I remember the slogan

Now I'm free to curl/style? where I never could before

Braun independent

imnottoofussed · 28/10/2024 21:45

I just find all the hot brush type things too big now. I have a revlon one but just can't get the hang of it

RandomMess · 28/10/2024 21:52

I not long sold mine on EBay and still have a newer model that both curls and straightens. The DDs were fascinated by it as a concept.

twilightcafe · 28/10/2024 21:54

Me and my friend used to tong our hair on the way to the bus stop to our Saturday jobs.

stressedandblessed · 28/10/2024 21:56

PeggyMitchellsCameo · 28/10/2024 16:33

In the brown bottles? Loved it.

It was the best shampoo ever - I can still smell it now!

MilesOfCarpetTiles · 28/10/2024 22:01

I went through several! My mum used them, called it a hot brush. Definitely was using them in the 2000s as a hair straightener type thing before I went out.

Summerhillsquare · 28/10/2024 22:01

Anytime, any place, anywhere!

CharlotteStreetW1 · 28/10/2024 22:06

Still got mine although I haven't used it for years.

MorrisZapp · 28/10/2024 22:15

My mum had a Clairol hot brush! It was beige and brown. It was hotter than Vesuvius.
