Please find me a perfume!

I've not worn perfume for many years and now, going through a divorce, want to find a new 'me' and a new scent.

I really don't know where to start, but I know I dislike sweet, heavy overpowering perfumes (I remember I really didn't like 'Poison' when it was a thing). When I was in my '20s I adored Paris by YSL and I've tried various Chanel fragrances over the years and Aqua di Parma 'Rosa Nobile' which I loved, but which reminds me of my ExH.

Any ideas gratefully received! I don't want to spend an absolute fortune but am happy to be tempted...Thanks. BTW I'm a young 62!

Perhaps the ‘new you’ is open to adventure? Why not have a look at all the sampling options at:

Bloom Perfume

Absolutely no need to settle on just one scent.

Dolce and Gabbama Light Blue. It's the perfume for people who don't like perfume.

The D&G Light Blue Intense version is even nicer. Recently discovered Bulgari Magolia Sensuel, very warm and lovely.

Thanks all! Some fab suggestions.

@Attelina Thank you! I've just remembered I had the Aqua Allegoria Mandarine & Basil years ago which I loved. Didn't know they were still available!
I think a trip to John Lewis is in order...

I got The Saltworks discovery box as a gift and I love it. You get 10 sample size bottles and a £25 voucher off a full sized bottle. The perfumes are really long lasting and smell gorgeous.

I like the Maison margiela replica perfumes. They smell like their names , so by the fireside is smoky and leather. Beach walk is fresh and has a salty sort of tang.

You can get a set of samples for around £60

Came here to recommend this! I have Chanel Coco mademoiselle and it's an excellent dupe

I think you should forget about consciously shopping for a perfume for the new you and just let it happen naturally. For example when you are waiting to meet for a nice lunch with a friend and squirt a few in a department store and one sticks out that you want to buy type of thing so that you have a perfume you can associate with a nice memory. Maybe stash a bit of cash specifically for the purpose.

I prefer complex citrus scents. Try Jo Malone orange bitters

I've rediscovered Ysatis

It's so personal that I'd get a discovery box to start before buying a bigger bottle.

Depending on your budget, Byredo do a 24 sample scent library + voucher to buy a 50ml bottle for £180.

Vyrao is an interesting brand that does a discovery box of 5 large samples for £79.

Floral street and maison margiela are Other brands I'd recommend that do the sample boxes.

I went to Next today as I like some of their perfumes. A purse size each for £6 so I got Cashmere, Nude and Paradise. Perfectly fine. I am not a perfume snob. Yes my favourite is Mitsouko (Guerlain) but if a perfume smells good I don't mind if it is a cheapie. I have had Cashmere and nude before and the Just Pink and some other Next ones. I think they are ideal for any age and would make good stocking fillers for teens etc.

Dyptique!

muddyford · 25/10/2024 18:19

I bought tiny testers on eBay of any I thought I would like, few pounds each and lasted four or five days at least. I'n nearly 62...

Househunter16 · 27/10/2024 17:22

I've gone onto the Small Aromas website and ordered several 1ml samples which are very reasonable. It's a real selection and I'm excited to see whether any of them are for me! Thanks to everyone for their input.
