How to wear this skirt when I feel too fat for skirts, hep me please?

I absolutely love this skirt

Buy Gaia Dark Red Pleated Skirt from the FatFace online shop

I'd be wearing it for a couple of Christmas nights out and Christmas day so would need two different tops to wear with it. I own a nice black wrap top which would do for a meal out and Christmas day but isn't really suitable for a party.

I do not own a skirt, I wear dresses, wide leg trousers and jeans. I'm a 16 and have big boobs and a very large stomach. I see people looking fabulous in skirts with tops tucked in and a belt but feel that draws too much attention to my very large waistline.

Anyone have any ideas that aren't a black wrap top?

thanks

Skirts don't suit me, never have. I'm not massively overweight but they just don't work for my proportions and the whole tucked/untucked top thing is a nightmare I just can't be doing with!

I just accept it and wear dresses or trousers. Why try to wear something that you know just doesn't work for you? There are so many nice dresses out there. Just wear what works for you? If you're unsure about it then you will not feel relaxed or confident in it.

I tried on nearly every dress in a large fat face when I was a bit bigger and found their clothes very unflattering(was nice when skinny).

DailyEnergyCrisis · 25/10/2024 19:47

Tummy is my problem area and this is surprisingly flattering with a tucked top or jumper and decent control tights:

In the screen shot the model on the left seems to have the waist under her bust rather than round her middle, so she's actually created an empire line effect that flows over her stomach. This is what helps it work. I think if it was round the natural waist of an apple it wouldn't work.

There was a video on the Fat Face Instagram a couple of days ago with two women styling this skirt, might give you some ideas

Yes! I came here to say this. Laura adlington and Lottie… someone. Sorry can’t remember her name. They both looked amazing in it.

This skirt is lovely. You could wear it with a loose thin sweater or An oversized t shirt like this

For goodness sake I can't believe the negativity on this thread. "Will do you zero favours" what the heck?!

OP, please check out the Instagram reel suggested above and then follow both of the creators who are wonderful women and will actually lift you up and encourage you to wear clothes you like.

Anyone can wear anything they like, it doesn't matter about your shape or height or "lumps" - it's how you style a piece and confidence.

The skirt is fabulous, I hope you feel fabulous wearing it ❤️

If I were asking an opinion, I'd want the TRUTH, negativity or not! The wrap dress one poster suggested would look fabulous. If I were on the large size I'd and actually had breasts that would nicely show the girls off, as well as distract from my middle or larger hips, I'd do the wrap dress and keep the eyes focused on my chest, face and hair. Short jackets only add bulk and weight; long flowing jackets are the best for full figures.

Floisme · 26/10/2024 07:54

I think, op that you should just get the skirt and wear it.

AndThereSheGoes · 26/10/2024 08:30

Maybe just me but I think the skirt looks terrible full stop. Reminds me of the 80's when that was one of the few styles available for the "larger lady". Synonymous with puffy ankles and helmet hair for me.

Anyway if you love it Op you clearly have an idea in your head how you will look in it. What do you see for the top half? For me a wrap top is a good bet. That new look one was great although maybe kits are too warm.

What a depressing thread. There’s so much more to clothes than being “flattering” (for which read “make you look thinner than you really are”), especially as most clothes makes next to no difference to how fat or thin you look.

Yep. Women are so conditioned to think they must look smaller. Take up less space.

AndThereSheGoes · 26/10/2024 10:04

Yep. Women are so conditioned to think they must look smaller. Take up less space.

I don't think this is entirely true. What women must do is dress for everyone else. Look hot for the male gaze, look modest and know our place, show off our "best bits", spend ages looking casual, buy new cool clothes so everyone can see you care etc. The ultimate sin is not giving a flying fuck.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/10/2024 11:30

I think the aim of satin plissé skirts is to make the wearer look like a fluted Grecian column. Straight up and down. If your body shape isn’t like that it will cling to the areas that protrude, Tum, bum and thighs.
If that’s what you want, knock yourself out.
Personally, I think those Belle Époque plissé dresses are a work of art but I’d never wear one myself.

The Delphos dress by Fortuny

How to wear this skirt when I feel too fat for skirts, hep me please?
Floisme · 26/10/2024 11:43

Well I guess that's why I feel increasingly out of synch with this board, because I'd wear that Fortuny dress like a shot. It's a work of art and, by extension, I would feel like one too.

Sgtmajormummy · 26/10/2024 11:54

@Floisme
Having a very different body type to the one it was designed for, I’d be afraid to stray into
“Kim Kardashian wears Marilyn Monroe’s ‘Happy Birthday Mr President’ dress”
territory…

Floisme · 26/10/2024 12:00

There was a time when I might have agreed with you @Sgtmajormummy but I no longer believe it's the role of my clothes to make my arse look smaller. I think their role is to make me feel so great that I don't care.

I took a screenshot, they both look gorgeous in it

It looks fantastic on! Great outfit.

Hear, hear.
I'd wear it but I'd need good underwear.

Yes anyone can wear anything they like but styling only goes do far

Whether the clothes will look good on you or make you feel good is a different matter

Dont forget models and pictures showing how great clothes look styled in a certain way have a lot of pegs and pins out of sight to create the look. There is also the practicality when you start walking in the clothes.

Dressing for your shape instead of against it makes everything gel together

Its akin to wearing a colour that suits you as opposed to a colour that makes you look washed out.

Wearing the right or wrong clothing can be life changing.

LikeTalkingToLassie · 26/10/2024 13:23

@Yalta , You are spot on there.
If you feel fabulous in something, you will radiate that good feeling
If you are self-conscious, it will show.

I'll add that you need good undies and good shoes, and be happy with your hair.

Viviennemary · 26/10/2024 19:30

Pleated skirts are renowned for making you look fatter. But I do like it. Depends what it looks like on.

autumn1610 · 26/10/2024 19:47

I love these skirts and I try them on and they look awful I’m a 14/16 and they do not flatter a larger stomach in my opinion. Order the skirt and see how you feel and then start planning tops if you find it flattering

DancingLions · 26/10/2024 23:21

As someone who's currently overweight, the constant suggestions of wrap dresses get on my nerves! I don't think they're particularly nice in style and they scream middle age to me! And I'm 55 😂but I'd feel older wearing one of those!

Wear the skirt with confidence OP. I'm fat. Nothing is going to disguise that so I'll wear stuff I enjoy wearing. Whether it makes me look bigger or not is neither here nor there. I'd rather feel happy in what I'm wearing.

Rainyblue · 27/10/2024 08:08

I am a size 14-16 and don’t find wrap dresses very easy to wear. There’s often the issue of gaping at the chest, so then you have to wear a cami or vest underneath, and have to find one which matches the dress. They are often mid-calf length so I think can look a bit old fashioned.

I think with pleated skirts it really depends on the style and the fabric. I’ve tried some which have looked awful and make me look much wider, but I do have a couple that hang straight down and look nice. I think you need a lightweight material with softer pleats and not rigid pleats.
