How to wear this skirt when I feel too fat for skirts, hep me please?

I absolutely love this skirt

Buy Gaia Dark Red Pleated Skirt from the FatFace online shop

I'd be wearing it for a couple of Christmas nights out and Christmas day so would need two different tops to wear with it. I own a nice black wrap top which would do for a meal out and Christmas day but isn't really suitable for a party.

I do not own a skirt, I wear dresses, wide leg trousers and jeans. I'm a 16 and have big boobs and a very large stomach. I see people looking fabulous in skirts with tops tucked in and a belt but feel that draws too much attention to my very large waistline.

Anyone have any ideas that aren't a black wrap top?

thanks

I took a screenshot, they both look gorgeous in it

I disagree - the one on the left looks pregnant! Hugely unflattering IMO.

OP, that cut and length of skirt isn't flattering on large stomachs. A shift dress would be loads more flattering if you want a skirt.

I'm glad you said "IMO" because not everyone thinks looking larger or even pregnant is automatically unattractive.

OP, if you can't help being self-conscious about your body then maybe wear shaper shorts underneath, but it's very likely nobody else will notice the "faults" you do.

How about a long cardigan or waistcoat with slits up the sides?

Teafortwo01 · 25/10/2024 09:57

Have you tried it on? I don’t find pleated skirts flattering either.

Laura manages to look lovely in just about everything she wears, I have no idea how, I couldn't wear a quarter of the clothes she does. She looks gorgeous everything!

I agree with the French tuck trend, the sooner that fucks off the better !

Olika · 25/10/2024 10:01

I cannot see this working on me with big tummy. I have a feeling it would make me look bigger than I am and wouldn't make me feel good. But if you put it on and it makes you feel good then go for it.

DonnaGiovanna · 25/10/2024 10:12

The only way I (similar shape) would wear this would be with a long, body skimming, cashmere sweater, probably with a slouchy cowl neck. I've seen this styling quite a lot lately and think it would look good on most body types.

DonnaGiovanna · 25/10/2024 10:14

I hate French tucks! Also I saw this skirt in real life yesterday and it was pinker than I expected.

I can see that working really nicely.

Teafortwo01 · 25/10/2024 10:21

If you have a long body you might get away with it. If you have a short body like me and big boobs and anything resembling a belly then it might not suit you.

LikeTalkingToLassie · 25/10/2024 10:31

Pleats add inches, so I'd give that skirt a swerve. I agree that it's lovely but you are not a fan of skirts and will struggle to style it.

dollopofsauce · 25/10/2024 10:36

Of course the OP can wear whatever she wants. It's also the case though that some styles don't suit some body types and can make you look larger or bulkier than you are. That would bother some people.

I love the look of this type of skirt but I don't wear them because I have big belly and short body. A long skirt with any kind of flare, particularly a pleated one, makes me look really wide. So if I do wear a skirt, it will be a straight one that skims.

Hear, hear.

I could pull off the skirt with a body-skimming top but I am smallish in the hips.

What a depressing thread. There’s so much more to clothes than being “flattering” (for which read “make you look thinner than you really are”), especially as most clothes makes next to no difference to how fat or thin you look.

LikeTalkingToLassie · 25/10/2024 11:32

It's your post that's depressing @Supermand . Flattering doesn't mean 'look thinner than you are' in my view.

I have clothes that fit the 'look thinner than I am' but they make me look shit.

To me, flattering means making you look good.

You’ve misunderstood. My point is that people on this thread are using “flattering” to mean “make you look thinner”- so many comments about “accentuating lumps”, “accentuating every bulge” “looking massive”, “the one on the lefts looks pregnant! Hugely unflattering IMO” etc etc. Grim.

Zebracat · 25/10/2024 12:00

I’m the same shape as you, but a size 18. I have a skirt very similar, although crepe rather than shiny. It looks great, pleats can look quite odd on people with a small waist and larger hips but actually skim a big stomach.I wear it with a fitted slash neck tshirt and a cardi, but I’ve been looking for a ballet style wrap in burgundy. NewLook has this.

LikeTalkingToLassie · 25/10/2024 13:09

I like the cardigan. I also like New Look for things like affordable and striking party dresses. They'd probably have something similar to the skirt in the OP.

Doggymummar · 25/10/2024 13:53

Skule · 24/10/2024 19:47

If you feel conscious about your mid-section, you'll only draw attention to it by having a top half that's in a different colour.

I'd recommend going with a top that is a tonal match with the skirt (like in the picture in the product page) and buying the matching cardi if you want sleeves.

How great does that model look in that outfit. I live the trousers just know on me I would look like dog poop.

LikeTalkingToLassie · 25/10/2024 14:47

@KimWexlerGoodman , They look nice but they both look overweight and the open jackets and the pleats make them look bigger.

@Supermand , I didn't misunderstand you. The OP was specifically asking about not drawing too much attention to "my very large waistline."

LastNight1Dreamt1WentToManderleyAgain · 25/10/2024 15:30

A silhouette I love is a long narrow clingy skirt, maybe with a slit or two, and an exaggerated top. Like the 'lampshade look' of the 1930s but modified. I don't do it as often I'd like.

I'm short, size 16 and big boobs. I wear long pleated skirts all the time with v neck jumpers and boots and get loads of compliments. They're swishy and look glam, like you've made an effort. So many comments on here that basically say unless it's slimming it's bad. Control underwear is hideously uncomfortable and sweaty and just serves as a permanent reminder to me that I'm trying to look thinner. Smooth lines, no vpl yes but no to tight waistbands and marked skin!

Onelifeonly · 25/10/2024 15:53

I have a completely different figure to yours op, but I have always found matching tops to skirts difficult. And though I'm slim, I'm also short waisted so pleats coming from the waistband never look right on me. Dropped pleats or a flared skirt look better.

TBH, this type of style and colour is fairly prevalent at the moment - why not find a dress similar to this? No issue with matching tops!
