How to wear this skirt when I feel too fat for skirts, hep me please?

I absolutely love this skirt

Buy Gaia Dark Red Pleated Skirt from the FatFace online shop

I'd be wearing it for a couple of Christmas nights out and Christmas day so would need two different tops to wear with it. I own a nice black wrap top which would do for a meal out and Christmas day but isn't really suitable for a party.

I do not own a skirt, I wear dresses, wide leg trousers and jeans. I'm a 16 and have big boobs and a very large stomach. I see people looking fabulous in skirts with tops tucked in and a belt but feel that draws too much attention to my very large waistline.

Anyone have any ideas that aren't a black wrap top?

thanks

I also find skirts quite unflattering due to a large stomach compared to the rest of me. A good pair of support underwear is your best bet. Or could you find something similar in dress form.

BookishType · 24/10/2024 16:38

I know the trend is to tuck in or french tuck, but I think that’s monumentally unflattering on all but the very slender. I’d wear it with a jumper that sits at hip length to hide your tum.

Glassbrick · 24/10/2024 16:39

Sorry, didn’t actually answer your question! How about a plain black tshirt with a statement necklace. But support underwear is definitely worth it. I actually find if I wear a longer top it’s even more unflattering.

pavementgerms · 24/10/2024 17:44

I think that tops tucked in look quite unflattering unless you have a very flat stomach.

MemphisBluesAgain · 24/10/2024 17:52

How about a plain long-sleeved black top but with a furry gilet over the top? The layer would obscure your stomach but also look funky and hopefully not be too hot. I think it would be quite cool and boho. This is the first example I could find but I'm sure there are other options.

Something special for the new season, this gilet instantly adds a playful note to any outfit in a mohair blend. Cleverly constructed with a loop technique for a shaggy finish and fastened with a simple hidden button, we love its endless layering option...

If you feel conscious about your mid-section, you'll only draw attention to it by having a top half that's in a different colour.

I'd recommend going with a top that is a tonal match with the skirt (like in the picture in the product page) and buying the matching cardi if you want sleeves.

Kayemm · 24/10/2024 20:07

There's a cardi! Amazing. That has made me so happy!

I agree that a French tuck can work, you can play around with tucking in different bits of the top. I also find quite boxy, slightly cropped tops work. As in ones that end a couple inches past the waistband, then there’s no need to tuck and the top isn’t tight either.

biedrona · 24/10/2024 21:27

I think that a shiny material only accentuates lumps. Perhaps something with less sparkle?

Gatecrashermum · 25/10/2024 00:05

Honestly OP, a pleated skirt like this will do you zero favours

What I've found works best for me with a similar figure is a silhouette which is straight up and down. So a knee length shift dress, for example. I've never managed to tuck anything in at the waist since I got bigger than a size 12, and even then, rarely.

It's a gorgeous skirt but there are lots of other lovely christmas outfits out there

Gatecrashermum · 25/10/2024 00:11

Something like this?

There was a video on the Fat Face Instagram a couple of days ago with two women styling this skirt, might give you some ideas

ManhattanPopcorn · 25/10/2024 09:04

As someone who has the same issue with skirts, if the tags are still on it, I'd suggest returning it and getting something that doesn't require so much effort for force it to work.

ithinkilikethislittlelife · 25/10/2024 09:10

I actually find that style of skirt quite flattering if you have a tummy as it's elasticated so will be forgiving on your waist and the pleats pattern will cover the tum and not pull to highlight it. I think the top it's with in the picture is lovely. A vest style top is very dressy. And you need sparkle. It's for Christmas 🎄

TreesWelliesKnees · 25/10/2024 09:20

Another problem with long skirts if you are larger round the middle is that the whole of your lower body can look as wide as your waist. It just hangs straight down like a rectangular block from the waist.

Newposter180 · 25/10/2024 09:25

I think if your tummy is your largest part, there might be better shapes out there for you. However, if I was to wear this, I’d get the matching cami from the picture to avoid a horizontal line across the middle, and then wear with an open tuxedo style blazer on top to streamline everything. And very high heels!

KimWexlerGoodman · 25/10/2024 09:28

Check out the reel on Instagram that PP suggested, it looks gorgeous with the matching cami on both sizes. They are wearing with a leather biker jacket which really finishes it off but no good for wearing inside, you could go for the same shape with a black cropped cardigan though?

Edited

Agree with this^
Im quite wide in stomach area so never ever wear tops tucked in whatever the current trend is.

KimWexlerGoodman · 25/10/2024 09:32

I took a screenshot, they both look gorgeous in it

Yalta · 25/10/2024 09:37

It is a lovely skirt but I think pleats don’t do anyone any favours even if they are carrying only a few extra pounds. They just accentuate every bulge
Think about the pleats themselves when on the hangar and the extra cm or 2 they take up and add that 2 cm all around your waist

I would go for a wrap dress which I think is very forgiving or a skirt that is cut on the bias and a top in the same colour that is close fitting. Then wear a long and oversized flowy Jacket/Cardigan

DrNo007 · 25/10/2024 09:40

As someone of similar shape to you I’d advise avoiding pleated skirts like this. They make us look massive across the middle. You need a tube sort of shape skirt, not clinging but skimming, with minimum fabric over the waist and stomach and hips. For a reference see the midi skirts at Peruvian Connection and if needed look for cheaper options in same shape. Alternatively you can have a flare at lower end but the upper end of the skirt should be narrow and fitted. Also avoid shiny fabrics. The French Chic lady on YouTube has good tips for big stomach.

SingingSands · 25/10/2024 09:42

For goodness sake I can't believe the negativity on this thread. "Will do you zero favours" what the heck?!

OP, please check out the Instagram reel suggested above and then follow both of the creators who are wonderful women and will actually lift you up and encourage you to wear clothes you like.

Anyone can wear anything they like, it doesn't matter about your shape or height or "lumps" - it's how you style a piece and confidence.

The skirt is fabulous, I hope you feel fabulous wearing it ❤️

PayYourselfFirst · 25/10/2024 09:43

I think if you get the matching cardigan it could resemble a Christmas cracker.
Lovely styled with a leather jacket and the cami as shown or a thin black cashmere sweater and heeled boots

They do both look gorgeous but they also look about 2 sizes larger than they actually are.

DrNo007 · 25/10/2024 09:44

Agree with a PP that wrap dress with v neck and cinched in below the boobs (our narrowest part) is most flattering. Sosandar is a good reference for these styles.
