Wool blazer/suit jacket with inside pockets

Are they out there? Anywhere?

What I'm looking for is what's standard in men's blazers/suit jackets, but cut for women. Inside pockets, 100% wool.

I've looked at Walker Slater, which do 100% wool, but their jackets for men contain triple the pockets as their jackets for women. Women get 2 external pockets. Men get 3 external pockets and 4 internal pockets! Compare and contrast: https://www.walkerslater.com/hepburn-wool-flannel-double-breasted-jacket-navy-stripe and https://www.walkerslater.com/edward-jacket-wool-flannel-stripe-navy Admittedly the double breasted cut of the woman's is snazzier, but it doesn't make up for the pocket poverty. (Their trousers for women are also too short, but I'm used to wearing men's trousers, whereas I don't know how easily a seamstress would be able to alter a man's jacket for a woman).

Budget wise: similar to the above (300-odd).Navy, ideally, or navy with something (as above), as I have navy wool flannel trousers already and it would be nice for it to go with them).

Ah this is my specialist subject and I'm afraid my conclusion is, only if you can afford Margaret Howell-esque prices.

I've tried buying second hand men's jackets but I've found seamstresses often reluctant to take them in at the shoulders because it's a big job and not worth their time. (I've also tried doing it myself and can see their point.) A 'proper tailor' (no disrespect intended to alterations people but I mean fully trained) is more likely to do it but a) they can be hard to find, at least where I am and b) they'll charge a lot more than a standard alteration rate. I've got an Agnes b Homme suit jacket just waiting for a tailor who'll take it on. .

It's sold out at the moment but there's a navy pinstripe blazer in the recent Bella Freud for M&S collection with one inside pocket. But it's only 40% wool and possibly more androgynous in shape than you'd like, although without being massively oversized (in my opinion).

I share your pain but let's face it, if they started making women's jackets and coats with inside pockets, they wouldn't sell as many bags.

Thank you for your reply! :(

There's a jacket at Margaret Howell, albeit not a blazer, which costs about what I spend on groceries in a year, so I will not be convincing myself that kind of spending would be reasonable at the current time :D I think once I want to accept spending over a thousand, I'd go out for a made to measure option, where surely I'd be able to specify the pockets. I've had much simpler things made years ago in my home country and I think I might splurge on a suit at some point in the coming years. But not right now!

I might try at some point, but I might try to locate the tailor first! I know what you mean about the difficulty of finding one. I've had some things altered, essentially taken in all around, but they were simpler sewn things and no lining was affected. Even there, the seamstress who used to do it for me left, and then the place (which was, as you say, an alterations place) ruined some clothes of mine, so I'm on the hunt for a reliable tailor. I had a couple of things done at another place, where the work was good, but what I'm missing is a comfortable atmosphere where you're meant to try it on as you come to pick up, rather than this set-up really geared to small repairs only.

It really is enraging that what every man gets, no woman does.

I have a wool blazer from & Other Stories that has an inside pocket as well as decent sized outside pockets. It's at least 8 years old and I don't know if any of their current stock still have inside pockets, but they're worth a look.

Could you ask an alterations place to insert a pocket into the lining?

Brillenbar47 · 25/10/2024 08:15

hi - if you look at the Jaeger jackets in M&s many are pure wool and they have an internal pocket

It is enraging, I completely get it op. My Agnes b Homme suit jacket (the one I mentioned upthread that's in need of a tailor) has three capacious inside pockets....

That's an interesting question about whether you could get an inside pocket inserted. I've never asked, or tried to do it myself, but the pockets are positioned on the inside of the lining with only the opening visible (I can't remember what it's called) so I'm guessing you'd first have to remove the lining and maybe even replace some of it. I doubt an alterations place would want to take it on - at least not the ones I've used - but if you find one that does, hold on to them very tight!
