It's black tie, but it's in a council run sports centre. I expect I'll hate it, but I've agreed to go on the basis that I've never been to such an event and the man who's invited me is rather lovely. He knows someone who's fighting.

I have a beautiful long silk evening dress that I've worn for pretty much every back tie event for the last 20 years (not many tbh) but wonder if it will be too much for this event? I'm really not inclined to spend money on it though.

I recently attended something similar (representing work). I was genuinely surprised at how casual some people were dressed (jeans!) but others were in full black tie. So I'd say wear what you like! If you're that worried about overdressing, a shorter dress and taking more casual footwear will allow you to adapt. But I say fuck it. I'm often happy to be the smartest or scruffiest in the room depending on my mood! (Usually scruffy)

I don't think many will be dressed up. I went to a charity boxing night at an event venue. It wasn't black tie but it did say 'dress to impress' & we paid for a table. Loads of people in jeans and hoodies. I felt overdressed in a skirt and heeled boots to be honest.

If it did say black tie I'd go cocktail dress at most after that experience!

I'd go slinky jump suit and heels. Dark green or black.

Bit more trendy. Long and silky but not a dress.

Can you style it in a modern way with a jacket. You'll probably need to keep it on.

All the charity boxing events I’ve seen queues for at my local sports centre the women are super glammed up with high heels and slinky tight dress.

Did no one spot the stealth boast that it still fits? 🤣

He's sold it to me as an opportunity to dress up. He'll definitely do the full black tie.

It sounds like dressing up would be good as you'll match him. If he turned up in black tie and you turned up in jeans it would be odd.
