Work Capsule Wardrobe Ideas

Hi, I've recently been offered a new job and it's the first job I've had without a uniform since 2010! I'm keen to have a nice work wardrobe but also be sensible and make sure things go together and can be mixed and matched.

The dress code is business casual I would say, maybe a little relaxed but definitely no jeans.

What kind of items would you suggest for a capsule wardrobe and how many of each? Also best places to buy the basics? Budget is probably high street but plan to look on vinted and in charity shops so recommendations of higher end brands also welcome!

I got a few key pieces from New Look as they’re reasonably priced. They do black trousers that are like a soft denim but look like smart trousers, so they could be suitable for workwear. I wear them for my role in property, meeting clients etc. Then I got some plain long sleeved tops and a couple of blazers, like not the tailored kind, more soft fabric type. I look reasonably smart, but am also comfy as everything is soft.
I’d say you need a couple of pairs of trousers, a couple of shirts, a blazer or two, a couple of smart jumpers, maybe a dress and a skirt depending on whether you feel comfy in that. If you’re wanting a capsule wardrobe I’d stick to more neutral colours so you can mix and match which items go together. Plus you can accessorise with an coloured scarf or bag for a pop of colour. And shoes, maybe with a slight heel?
