Completely lost with jeans

Please can someone help me navigate what's in fashion with jeans now. As a millennial, I am traumatized by jeans that used to get wet at the bottom in the winter so I don't want any wide legs. I like the look of straight leg jeans but I'm so confused as to how they are meant to sit on the shoe. Are they meant to be half mast? Sitting on the shoe? A little bit long? Which shoes for which jeans? The rules used to be so simple and I think it is a sign I'm getting old because I don't understand the fashion rules anymore!

What style do you like? And what shoes do you normally wear?
Skinnies are back by the way.

Drawfulofbitz · 12/10/2024 08:55

Cropped is the easiest to style shoe wise but not so practical going into winter.

PermanentlyTired03 · 12/10/2024 09:01

I have one pair of wide straight jeans from hush that are just the right length. The rest are skinny that I wear with trainers or ankle boots. I have hips, so many boyfriend style/baggier cut are NOT flattering!

That is another ongoing issue of mine! I love Gazelles but struggle to squish my feet into them now due to bunions so I tend to wear Vans as they are wide fit.

I've got used to wearing mine a bit shorter with trainers or mary jane ballet flats.I don't really get on with straight and cannot bear the feeling of skinnies now.My favourite are some vintage 501s I roll up(2nd hand £6), a pair of fat face slightly cropped boyfriend jeans (2nd hand £5), a pair of Other Stories cropped wide legged (not 2nd hand unfortunately!).Got to wear what suits your frame though. I love full length wide legged jeans but you are right...only in dry weather.Maybe boyfriend / mom jeans would work for you?I bought some black barrel leg work trousers from M&S last week which are amazing and now I'm tempted to see if their BL jeans are as good.Again they are slightly short and show a bit of ankle above my shoe.

I think I like a straight cut. I'm a small apple shape with a flat bum so bootcut or wide leg would flatter but I can't be bothered with the wet legs!

Should say I've kept my skinnies as I will be wearing them tucked into wellies, boots in the winter.Although I tend to find tights and a short dress/skirt more comfortable but that's not practical on dog walks.

Skinnies just go with everything! Still like them with my doc martens or chunky boots but not keen with my trainers.

A few of you have suggested slightly cropped this was my thoughts too I think it's a flattering length and you can show off the shoes without the jeans getting wet!

I love jeans fashion at the moment because so many of the rules have gone out of the window. There's no single style dominating and so I switch depending on mood, the rest of my outfit and the weather.

As a rough rule of thumb, I like to wear barrel or straight legs a little bit shorter - top of the ankle length - and wide legs or flares pooling over my shoes (no I don't wear them in the rain - see above) except in the summer when I still like wide legs cropped to the ankle.

I mostly wear them with Solovair Gibsons (flat lace ups) or chunkier lace up ankle boots (but then I'm not too interested in shoe trends and don't like trainers).

Skinnies, as far as I'm concerned. are welcome to make a comeback just as long as they behave and don't squeeze out every other style like they did last time.

If you fancy some wider & longer jeans but not the wet hems, pin them up at the back 🙂

Cropped look good with trainers & you can add socks.

Socks with crops and ballets/loafers are harder to pull off so that would require a longer length.

willsandnoodle · 12/10/2024 10:03

What boots are we wearing with jeans? Cropped wide leg, and short leg 501s are my go to. I want something other than my Chelsea boots, more like biker but more feminine..

Drawfulofbitz · 12/10/2024 10:06

With boots it depends on the boot and the length of the jean, some of my boots look good with cropped and some need the jeans to hit the vamp or higher.

Floisme · 12/10/2024 10:07

Having said I'm not that interested in shoes and boots, I do quite fancy some cowboy boots to wear with some of my jeans. But I've only tried one pair so far and they pinched like mad.

Combattingthemoaners · 12/10/2024 10:08

I’m pleased someone else is going through the millennial fashion crisis! No idea what we are meant to wear anymore. Sorry for being no use, just wanted to say you are not alone haha.

Drawfulofbitz · 12/10/2024 14:34

@Floisme i had an amazing pair of cowboy boots in the early 00s but they were so uncomfortable. It’s put me off for life!

canyon2000 · 12/10/2024 14:47

I like straight legs either cropped or long so they slouch at the bottom a bit. I think straight legs that just hit the top of your shoes look a bit meh!

Pickledprawn · 12/10/2024 15:32

Thank you for all of your suggestions sorry I have had such a busy day with the kids and haven't the time to respond to everyone!
What are people's opinions on bootcut? I think they are very flattering but are they in fashion again I have no clue 😂

HotHorseRadish · 12/10/2024 16:36

Bootcut and flares are in fashion thankfully as these suit my shape much better than want other style!

YYURYYUCICYYUR4ME · 12/10/2024 16:43

Purchased at different times - I have a skinny, straight, wide leg and recently purchased high waisted flared pair and the high waisted flares are my favourite and a surprise to me that they suit my shape and are so comfortable to wear. Go somewhere you can try the widest range of cuts and my flares are from Tu, bought after trying a range of pairs, at different price points, and they definitely hit the spot and a great price point!

TheSingingBean · 12/10/2024 16:50

I’m on holiday in a European capital city with my daughter and have literally just commented to her that while we’ve been out today I’ve walked past people wearing flares, skinnies, barrel, straight, mom / boyfriend, and boot cut jeans.

All styles suited the wearers, everyone I saw looked good. I LOVE that it seems as though you can wear what suits you instead of having to follow a particular idea of what’s in fashion.

Long may it continue.

I used to have some too and I've no idea what happened to them Sad
I don't remember them being uncomfortable but maybe my feet were tougher then!

eurochick · 12/10/2024 17:02

I got some wide leg jeans that look lovely but I haven't worn them yet as they are long and it has been wet pretty much every day. I remember hating rising damp when boot cuts weee in before skinnies.

quirkychick · 12/10/2024 17:08

I've always worn a range of styles of jeans. Recently I have been wearing quite a lot of straight or slim fit jeans, often turned up with socks, ankle boots or trainers - I also wear flares, if dry and also have some loose jogger jeans, again with trainers or ankle boots. In winter I often wear slim jeans to tuck into longer boots for cold days. I think it depends what else you wear with them rather than set rules.
