Can I wear boots with this dress to a wedding!?

I’m going to a winter wedding in late November. I have found a dress I really like the look of but would it look completely wrong to wear it with tights and boots? And if not can anyone recommend some to me?

I never wear heels and winter weddings always throw up this issue for me! However I now have a toddler so really need practical footwear! I don’t mind a bit of a heel so long as it’s not narrow and not too high.

Actually at first I thought boots would be awful but I do think there is a chance you'll get away with these and thick black tights?

I agree with this.

NotSoHotMess24 · 11/10/2024 16:09

My first thought was that it's quite dark to wear to a wedding! Too close to black. If it comes in another colour, it would work with pumps though?

TheCosyRain · 11/10/2024 18:33

I’m so confused by some of the replies here. What sort of dress would other posters go for at a winter wedding? And what footwear with it? Because some replies have seemed to no to tights and shoes as it’ll be cold, but no to boots? I consider myself a fairly slim size 12 but don’t like figure hugging clothes and I think anything like that would require a heel anyway. I’ve never ever found a jumpsuit that is a good fit on me either.

Embellished silver pointed flats

Victorian-style boots might work as they look more delicate than modern boots.

No.

In a word.

I think there are two reasons boots won’t work. The hemline is high/low and introducing a third definite ‘level’ with the boot will looks odd. Secondly it’s too floaty and not the right floaty to contrast with a biker boot.

I’d do a silver pointy flat shoe. No strap over the ankle unless very low - it will cut your leg off in an unflattering way. Chunky platform silver Esska sandals would be my choice. They also have a style called Laura which is low-ish block heel. Not the right colour to go with navy but that’s the style I’d have in mind for someone who doesn’t want high heels.

Laura Metallic Vari

Esska’s Laura twin-strap Mary Jane shoes in Metallic blend style and comfort perfectly. Featuring a sleek metallic leather upper and lining, they come with a pointed toe shape and buckle fastening. The low 45mm heel and durable rubber sole ensure lasti...

I think the dress is lovely and if if is a style you like you will be more comfortable. I would not be doing bare legs as I find that makes shoes more uncomfortable. A lot depends on where the wedding is, indoor or outdoor, cold church or warm venue, whether the ceremony and reception are at the same place or are you travelling?

I wear boots and dresses all through winter, including maxi cotton and silk dresses, but that's not a "dress and boots" dress

I would wear tights and closed shoes. There's a lot of nonsense posted on here about tights.

I wouldn't wear that dress, as it's not my thing, but it's not a dress that goes with boots. The vibe isn't right.

The dress you like is not the right style for boots IMO.

Thanks for your replies. No I don’t have any boots in mind for it. Can anyone suggest footwear that would go with it that would be kind to my feet? Or do I need to rethink the dress?

I just can’t do heels. They’re too uncomfortable and make me miserable! But I just love the look of the dress. Empire line is most flattering on me and it covers my arms too which I’m not too keen on either!

I think rethink the dress really.

What time of day is the wedding and what will the setting be?

Those a very charming! Relieved to see they're made on a modern last and have foam insoles, too - real Victorian shoes are an absolute bastard (real Victorian working women wore real work boots).

These look perfect for someone with a toddler going to a winter wedding. They are quietly glamorous and also comfortable, warm and beautiful. Not too figure hugging.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 11/10/2024 20:10

I think those Victorian style boots would be awful, sorry. Pantomime Dame territory.

I think navy suede western style block heeled boots could work fine, but would probably wear them with sheer, flesh coloured tights rather than opaque. Agree with PP that people on here are really weird about tights.

Doingmybest12 · 12/10/2024 07:14

OP, the problem with style advice on here is you'll get as many opinions as you get people making different choices in real life. If you are a dress and boots person, you can make it work, the recent post with the suede ankle boots would be my idea or a suede shoe boot. All the tan, shiny, long boots would not be. Most of the shoes suggested would be a no from me. But you know what style you usually go with and can pull off and you should have confidence in that. I'd only check answers now to see if I like the recommended boot ,not to give overall style advice.

Lovely dress @TheCosyRain 😊 I can’t handle heels either but have worn these to the last few weddings I’ve been to with my toddler and been fine 😊 all the straps are soft leather so no rubbing etc and the heel isn’t too high. I believe they do a lower version too.
In fact, I’ve got a few pairs of heeled Gabor sandals in different colours that I tend to wear for most weddings!

I can’t imagine you’ll be spending much time outside at this time of year so personally I wouldn’t worry about being cold etc

I wore a long sleeve floaty Oliver bonas dress to a winter wedding with platform patent boots, I thought they looked fine but maybe everyone secretly thought they looked awful!

hobbledyhoy · 12/10/2024 07:41

I'd go for pointed slingbacks in silver, you can get them with a very low heel but they still look dressy and would go with that style of dress.

hobbledyhoy · 12/10/2024 07:43

Bit like this, keeps your toes warm in winter but matches the dress a bit more than boots

It depends on the dress.

I suggested upthread that taupe/natural high boots go well with a navy dress. Found a pic to give you an idea @TheCosyRain. I think it's a lovely look for autumn/winter (you'll need to click on the pic to see it full size).
You've had loads of great suggestions all in, you're sure to find something! 😊
