Can I wear boots with this dress to a wedding!?

I’m going to a winter wedding in late November. I have found a dress I really like the look of but would it look completely wrong to wear it with tights and boots? And if not can anyone recommend some to me?

I never wear heels and winter weddings always throw up this issue for me! However I now have a toddler so really need practical footwear! I don’t mind a bit of a heel so long as it’s not narrow and not too high.

It's a November wedding not July it's going to be bloody freezing. I think boots and tights would look great personally.

Where’s the dress from? It’s beautiful! Not sure about boots 👢

pizzaHeart · 11/10/2024 01:28

is it a church wedding? Then it’s coat, tights and boots in the church and then change to shoes (and maybe different tights for reception) it’s what I personally did for a cold weather wedding and quite a few other guests did this too, some stayed in boots.

Have a look at the Esska gold shoe boot. They could look nice

Yes these are lovely

Zoomo · 11/10/2024 01:32

Actually I meant the shoes not the boots

I have a few pairs of these and they're sooooo comfy!

Conqueeftador · 11/10/2024 09:43

How about these (I love boots/trainers with dresses, as I can’t do heels).

I get you with the heels.
I can't wear them anymore due to damage from wearing stiletto's. I get awful nerve pinch in my toes. When I do wear them they either need to be peep toe or backless.
Maybe wedges or kitten heel shoes? I do think boots would ruin the look of the dress tho, sorry 🙃

What about these silver shoes from Next? They're flat, with a block heel and the silver makes them dressy enough for a wedding.

These look perfect

I've always worn boots with dresses for winter weddings for decades now.
Fuck sandals when you're in a freezing church/castle/barn! (I guess more bearable in a heated hotel, but I'd still wear boots for comfort)

I'm actually considered quite stylish and when I think back to all the weddings I've attended I can not remember a single guests shoes, apart from one lady who was in her 20's and wearing stripper high heels, with the backs of her heels absolutely ripped to shreds and bleeding over her heels. I just wondered if she was on drugs because I'd be calling an ambulance in pain (joke) whereas she was happily chatting and dancing away. She later (sans heel) did the splits on the terrace at whatever 4 weddings 'naice' hotel the wedding was held, so maybe she was.

Moral of the story, your boots will be fab, you are not an idiot to wear fishing waders, trust your own judgement, and enjoy the wedding.

And asking MN for style advice, that ship sailed a long time ago, this place usually recommends crew clothing/white stuff and similar, so don't pay much heed.

Sure, boots and a dress for a winter wedding is absolutely fine in principle.

But OP asked about a specific dress, one with which boots would look wrong, unless potentially it was a pale coloured stiletto boot, which OP has also said she doesn't want . The skirt is to light and floaty for the heaviness of most styles of boots imo. Personally, I'd change the dress to one that allows me to wear the shoes I want, but again not what OP asked.

However, despite liking my dress sense, I'd never call myself stylish or have the superior attitude to assume I was considered so. I'm also posting on a S&B MN thread (despite owning no white stuff/ crew clothing 😮). So am probably wrong. (Apart from where I agreed with you, but a stopped clock is still correct twice a day, right!!).

Im following with interest as also going to a wedding in November. Dont like heels and was wondering about boots but interested that ballet flats are "on trend" as i have no idea what is/isnt on trend. Could I wear a dress like that with ballet flats ?

DaveWatts · 11/10/2024 10:46

Going against the grain here but I'd wear that with over-knee suede boots, the skin-tight kind, or possibly silver pixie boots. Definitely not open-toe sandals in winter!

I wouldnt wear that particular dress with tall boots but as I said upthread I would get a different fabric dress and do so, I think it would be incongruous with wintery boots

However, I dont understand the many posters saying they wouldnt wear boots to a wedding, why not?

Long over the knee suede boots. lovely.

But that's the dress the OP likes! She's only looking for footwear suggestions...

I wouldn't wear long boots to a wedding. For me, long boots are for shopping trips and walking. For dancing, crowded parties etc I'd want to be in shoes. I wouldn't wear over the knee boots with the style of dress in the OP either, for me over the knee boots look best with short skirts/long coat or fitted trousers/long sweater. It's all just personal preference.

soupfiend · 11/10/2024 13:41

Yes I know that is the dress she likes but its going to be hard to find suitable shoes for it that suit her preferences and match the dress, a lot of the shoes suggested here are just plain ugly and with no sophistication at all, plus in winter is going to be cold, who wants to be in tights and shoes.

The sort of boots I have in my mind are cerrtainly not for shopping or walking!!

Acornsoup · 11/10/2024 13:42

A shoot might work but I don't think a boot would.

The suggestions just aren't to your taste. But they might be to the OP's taste. I'm not keen on low or block heels myself, but lots of people are, and they look good in them.

Acornsoup · 11/10/2024 13:46

Like this but navy

ballybooboo · 11/10/2024 14:37

@Gentlemanwiththistledownhair so am I the stopped clock or are you? GrinFlowers

Garlicbest · 11/10/2024 15:21

Aaaand yet another opinion here 😂 when I first read your OP, I imagined this dress with knee-high leather boots having a moderate block/cowboy heel - and it looked good. It would also look nice with some neat ankle boots or statement boots like the ones @Conqueeftador suggested (TK Maxx, Clark's).

What won't work, imo, is a pair of boots that come halfway up your calves, as they'll visually cut your legs into three slices. You could get over this by matching the boots to your tights exactly, but I foresee that being a hassle.

There are plenty of long boots that come right up to your knee, and over-the--knee boots as suggested upthread.

I would definitely NOT go for gold or strappy 'party' shoes. For one thing your feet'll get cold and, for another, floaty contrasted with strong works better than floaty-floaty.

Not necessarily these Next boots they were just the first ones I found.

Flat shoes are on trend, yes. Lots of people don’t wear heels any more.

beachcitygirl · 11/10/2024 15:59

Oliver bonas have gorgeous silver Mary Jane's, low blocky heel, where with a nice glossy nude chiffon tight ?

PrimalLass · 11/10/2024 16:06

I think slim knee-high boots are the only sort that would go.
