Hats like this - ok or hideously frumpy?

I'm in my 50s but don't want to look too frumpy. However I would like a waterproof hat, rather than always having an umbrella or a hood.

These hats suit me but I've always thought of them as being grumpy.

What's your verdict, Vipers?

Frumpy!
Get a hat with a brim like an Australian outback one where rain funnels off
Much better 👍

HumanbyDesign · 03/10/2024 16:56

Ummm definitely frumpy, sorry 😬 bucket hat style is pretty cool but it's that corduroy trim that pushes it over the edge IMO...

GoldenSunflowers · 03/10/2024 16:57

Depends on the rest of your outfit. I like it. I also like cloche hats, though I’ve never worn one.

Aethelthryth · 03/10/2024 17:02

Ok for the country but not for town

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/10/2024 17:04

I find those hats a bit gloomy—they just say "ugh Winter is shite"—and the crumpled folds get water stuck in them anyway.

I agree with a pp that a wide, stiff-brimmed hat—like a waxed outback or fedora—keeps the rain off better and looks more stylish and fun.

I really don't like hoods, much prefer a hat in the rain but it is hard to find one that doesn't look frumpy.

Sorry it is not a good looking hat.

But I thought that the website was called stoma fit which would have been perfect looking at that hat.

henlake7 · 03/10/2024 17:13

As long as you arent wearing a plastic headscarf to protect your shampoo and set then I think you are fine!

(sometimes I think 'frumpy' can be a look anyways....if you have a unique enough style then you can usually turn it into 'quirky').😎

The granny-core thing only looks stylish and quirky on winsome, willowy twenty-somethings, not anyone who is actually old enough to be a granny.

I don't think it's that "frumpy" I have a similar sunhat but it has a wider brim and it suits me. The problem with buying hats online is you don't know how they'll fit and look. Tiny head here.

JC03745 · 03/10/2024 17:20

Frumpy! And useless!
The brim is too narrow to be used as a sunhat
The brim is too wide to be a warm, beanie type winter hat
The whole thing isn't fashionable as a trendy hat that doesn't have a specific purpose.
Sorry, but I associate them with someone rummaging through bins or the homeless bird woman from Home Alone.

I think you'd need Miss Marple vibes to pull that one off. Or as someone else said, be very young and stylish. If you are neither end of the spectrum, I'd avoid I'm afraid!

Angelofmycoins · 03/10/2024 17:38

I've got this one from Barbour. Also a waxed baseball cap i sometimes wear instead.

Thanks, everyone's pretty much echoing what I thought.

I think I could have pulled it off 30 years ago, but you do have to be wary of "granny" styles when you're older.

I've got one of the outback type hats, but that's something I'd wear more for walking in the countryside rather than with a mac in town.

Would love a standard bucket hat but they don't suit me at all.

I might give a waterproof fedora a go though.

Any other recommendations gratefully received!

I don't think bucket hats flatter anyone of any age. Go for a waxed Fedora. Something like this, in navy or olive:

Frumpy - and scary! All the women I’ve seen wearing those are either grumpy or very fierce - or both!

Onlyonekenobe · 03/10/2024 18:35

It’s a bit Brenda Blethyn as Vera. Love that fedora though.

AllAboutNiamh · 03/10/2024 18:38

It’s frumpy and then some.

Rainingtoomuch · 03/10/2024 18:44

It does look like the hat Vera wears.

twohotwaterbottles · 03/10/2024 18:49

It's a bit Vera

I knew exactly what style hat it was going to be before I clicked on the link. Absolutely hideous I'm afraid 😀

Much prefer the Barbour one that a PP suggested. The fedora is great too although perhaps harder to style?

StMarieforme · 03/10/2024 20:03

I wear a leather cowboy hat in rain or sun. LOLs great with a pair of shades and a bit of lipstick!

deeahgwitch · 04/10/2024 00:14

Check out the Jack Murphy Boston wool felt water resistant hat.
It's great.
