Barrel jeans

I’ve just bought these and I really like them but no idea what to wear with them? I have a short blouse and some flats that would look nice I think but any ideas would be appreciated

I’m not sure, I don’t think I’m the right shape for these, I don’t even think they look very nice on the model!
Try them on with what you’ve got, it’s good you had an outfit in mind for them.

They do look okay on, I wasn’t sure they would but I like them but only wore them with a bra on top so definitely won’t be going out like that 😉

I wear barrel jeans a lot (the Whistles ones) and really like the look although it took some getting used to as I’d previously always worn skinnies. I normally wear mine with a fitted top (long sleeved round neck tshirt in this weather, or a thin jumper), always tucked in and with a belt. I often roll my jeans up at the bottom to show a bit more ankle, but I’ve got short legs - you may not need to do this! I find a bit of defined waist/ankle helps balance all the volume of denim and make it a fun statement rather than looking like you’re drowning in fabric. I love mine - enjoy wearing yours OP!

Thank you, this was sort of what I was thinking. I have a long sleeve scoop back top from Arket which I think could look good.

I would think anything (in an acceptable colour) on the Aligne site would work well with them. These are the tops they’re currently offering:

And I’d experiment with loafers and Mary Jane shoes.

I love barrel leg jeans and always wear them with shorter tops/jumpers or tucked in. Mine are ankle length and I wear them with trainers or combat boots (not tucked in, just to clarify!).

OuterSpaceCadet · 03/10/2024 11:34

Agree about defined waists and ankles helping the proportions of the look although sometimes it's nice to not give a fuck too. I really think barrels are the perfect compromise between fashion and practicality (ha that's probably put some people off them right there). The comfort and fashionyness of baggyness without having to revisit the soggy denim flapping against my ankles from the early 00s.

puzzlesandactivediscussions · 04/10/2024 05:48

TY I ended up wearing them out with the Arket scoop back top (as above) and some red Mary Jane’s. Really love the shape of them.

‘The comfort and fashionyness of baggyness without having to revisit the soggy denim flapping against my ankles from the early 00s.’

This! I’m 37 and not prepared to put up with wet ankles this time round, but am very happy to embrace the grungy comfort of looser jeans. Barrel legs all the way!

workworkworkblahblahblah · 07/10/2024 10:12

I'm wearing barrel leg jeans today with a striped Arket tshirt tucked in, and Hoka black trainers on my feet.

puzzlesandactivediscussions · 07/10/2024 10:27

I have to say I'm a total convert. So flattering and much easier to style that I'd initally thought

I recently got some of the Abercrombie ones, having previously worn the Whistles ones which are a much less barrel-y shape. I've worn then with knits from Arket and &OtherStories, Birkenstock Bostons and Adidas Sambas so far. I tend to do a half tuck and think as long as the top hits at about hip-bone level it's fine, longer than that and you risk looking like an actual barrel.

Chocolateteabag · 07/10/2024 14:55

Another vote for the "practical baggy" look

I am wearing my Primark pale denim pair with Hokas or DM's
I have baggy animal print ones from Matalan which are rolled up and worn with black chunky boots and either a white shirt or black crew neck tucked in

Currently waiting for some red dm Chelsea boots to arrive from Vinted which I'm hoping won't look too clown like (but I also don't care - I like bright colours)

TheLeadbetterLife · 07/10/2024 16:34

I love barrel legs, they really are the perfect jeans - as pp said, comfortably baggy but tapered, so you can go grungy or smart. They suit me as I’m rectangular and have muscular thighs.

I wear mine with slouchy jumpers or various shirts - smart tucked in silk ones or oversize linen with only two buttons done up (low neckline / hint of bra and belt stops it being too potato sack).

Shoes - anything goes. Slides, converse-style trainers, loafers, ballerinas.

Puppylucky · 07/10/2024 18:24

I really like the loose on loose look with these jeans so a relaxed top that goes to about hip length over the looser leg. Personally I think it looks more modern than the right top loose bottom look and as long as the top isn't too long your proportions are fine - and man is it comfy!
