Quest for really comfortable, well made flat boots

Saucisses · 02/10/2024 07:49

Morning all. I'm after a pair of preferably lace up flat boots to wear with cropped wide leg jeans/ cords and shorter dresses. Nothing super chunky or spectacular. Just well made, plain, super comfortable and smartish looking.

I'd love an oxblood colour but dark brown would do.

I've heard DM's take an age to wear in (and aren't so well made now). Has anyone tried Solovair?

Any ideas where else I could look? Budget up to £300 (at a push)

Seasalt and ecco boots do lace up flat ankle boots, sometimes i use a three quarter insole as well from Amazon for my flat feet and past plantar fasciitis. I prefer 3/4 insoles as it leaves space for my toes to wiggle.

I find Fly London boots incredibly comfortable and hardwearing.

I've only ever had their usual fare - mid calf or knee boots with a zip - but they look like they do lace ups too.

Oxblood lace ups

Love my oxblood Solovair boots. They did take a while to wear in to comfortable though (not the heels - across the toes was stiff) but others have said they were comfy from the office so it may just be my feet. I've worn them for 5 winters now and they still look as good as when I got them, so well worth the price.

Those are gorgeous. Do they take much wearing in?

I've tried solovair, lanx, blundstone, etc., I prefer DM pascal and Virginia/groucho for comfort. No breaking in. The leather of the pascal is so soft. The Virginia or groucho aren't the extremely soft leather of the pascal, but they're very easy to break in. I once recieved a new pair of virginia an hour before leaving for a long flight with lots of airport walking (I bought the boots before I knew I would be travelling). I wore 2 pairs of socks and only had the slightest of hints of a blister on one heel once I arrived at my destination 26 hrs later. The Virginia/groucho will last longer than the pascal but I bought in the sales and think they're all more than worth it for the price and comfort.

People talk a lot about DM not being the quality it once was. I'm sure that's true, but I didn't know the brand then. But I just get the pleasure of a nice shoe now without any of the disappointment of whatever they were like back then.

They are very lovely - I may feel an autumn purchase coming on!

The three pairs I've had didn't, not like DMs at all. My feet are on the narrower side (less so after two pregnancies!) for reference.

Sounds great. My feet were quite narrow until I had my little one 😅

I love Ariat boots, pricey but so well made and comfortable they’re well worth the money.

Can reccomend ecco boots ..think mine are 8yrs old and still good

Normallynumb · 03/10/2024 11:33

Another recommendation for Ecco
So well made and comfortable
I've had one pair for 5 years and a lovely smooth black leather pair for 2 years

I’ve just got a really nice pair of biker style boots from Celtic and Co - they are very comfortable. They also have a lace up style that I am trying to justify buying.

On softening leather, this stuff is amazing
https://amzn.eu/d/bjg3lKa

It makes the leather so soft, my husband went too far and his boots have no structure any more!

It's intended for saddles and a little goes a long way so the pot will last about 10 years.

Hmm, that's looks like a monetised link, it wasn't me! Google it, it's widely available.

Nitgel · 03/10/2024 12:04

I just got some damson knee high from brora they're fab. Not lace up

Saucisses · 03/10/2024 13:20

Thanks all. There are loads of ideas on here. I'm going to start with a try on in Ecco and will take it from there.

Yet another recommendation for Solovair. The DM-style 8-hole boots take a bit of wearing in, but the boots that don't go higher than the ankle don't take long.
Quality is excellent. My favourites are the dealer boots and monkey boots.

Fly London is also excellent quality.

I have these, which are beautifully made and very comfortable:

I also have them in the brandy, and have walked miles in them.

Good luck with your choice 😎

I'm a big fan of Josef Seibel.

wonderingwhatlifemeans · 03/10/2024 19:56

I have been recommending these but only because I wear my pair virtually all winter!

They are a brand called bareback boots and are for horse riding and yard work but also do more everyday boots.

I prefer JOSEF SEIBEL Conny 53 or WESTLAND Peyton 02 – JOSEF SEIBEL
