Fiftieth Birthday Party - What to Wear?

Morning!

I'm off to a 50th birthday party in a few weeks. It's in a private room above a nice city centre bar/restaurant. Here are three options from my wardrobe - with the caveat that I'm not wearing a proper bra 😂
What do you think?
I don't want to buy anything new. But I'm not averse as long as its cheap-ish, can be dressed down and worn many more times. FYI, I'm 5'5, 38 yrs, size 8.

And what shoes? I've given up on proper shows since Covid so the only option really is a pair of chunky heeled sandals. I'm definitely not buying new shoes.

I'd go for the black one, it's the only one that says 'party'. The other two are just very casual.

The black one with the right shoes and jewellery will look good. 🥳

I think that it really depends on your crowd. If i am honest, I’ve been to a lot of 50th recently and none of those would really be what people would wear. The black one is the best but I would go more for something like black wide legged trousers, in a silky or velvet material with a high waste and a silky or lacy blouse and either trainers or mid heeled boots. Otherwise one of the dresses a previous poster linked to.

Another look if it’s not too smart is wide dark blue or black high waist flared or wide jeans, silky cami and a blazer with a gorgeous evening bag and maybe something like a leopard print pointy shoe or a pointy boot.

I’ve also got some flared slightly cropped pleather trousers i wear with boots and a silky shirt quite unbuttoned with lots of gold jewellery, Monica vinader style

Definitely the all black one.

MorrisZapp · 30/09/2024 17:14

Velvet and fur at the start of October? Don't shoot your shot, it's a long old shift until spring comes around 😁

theleafandnotthetree · 30/09/2024 17:24

The plain black is very chic and with the right (subtle!) accessories, makeup etc could look very effortlessly stylish. The orange is too soggy/summery, the black and white is fine if you think your current shoes would go better with it.

BiccysR4dunking · 30/09/2024 17:58

I like the black & white jump suit best.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 30/09/2024 18:01

The 50th birthday party I went to at the start of September had the birthday girl in a pale nude or lilac sequin vest top and lilac tailored smart trousers. The guests were in a mish mash of styles. I think I wore a green and black/navy plisse midi long sleeved dress with a bright green blazer.

BarrioQueen · 30/09/2024 18:26

The black & white one is lovely, as is the all black one. the orange jump suit seems a bit too summery and more than a bit US prison vibe.

Assuming you’re in the UK, do you not possess anything more seasonal? I feel cold just looking at you - and if it were my party I’d want people to turn up in velvets and (fake) fur. (Maybe that’s just me?)

All your outfits look perfectly fine - for a summer day in town.

Edited

Not necessarily just you - but definitely not anyone I know !

OP I like the first one .

My favourite is no.3 - the black one. With block heel sandals it’d look perfect!
Agree the orange is more for summer and I think the black and white is summery/ day time too

Agree. It looks great. Black and white one doesn't look as sleek.

LivelyBlake · 30/09/2024 21:49

All black for me

User12356 · 30/09/2024 22:01

The black and white or all black. The all black is more dressy/formal so wear that if you feel the event requires it.
The navy polka dot is fine but what you have is nicer. The polka dots seem too big on it and I think this makes it look a bit cheap. Spend the money on a new pair of shoes if you feel you need them.
Enjoy the party.

whoscoatsthatjacket2012 · 30/09/2024 22:04

All black with some ankle boots or trainers like converse
Sandals unless they're strappy heels is odd in October
Biker jacket if you have one

Hayley1256 · 30/09/2024 22:15

I think the plain black one is the most dressy, especially woth some nice jewelry and shoes. I would probably go for something like this if it has to be a jumpsuit

The all black one if I absolutely had to choose. The others are daytime soccer mom style.

I’d wear something like this from Zara (or any of the Zara dresses recommended by a pp). Can be dressed up or down, and top and trousers worn separately.

The black one . Most able to be dressed up.

PearlQuail · 30/09/2024 22:44

I like number 3, bit more fitted and eveningy. I would be tempted to spend the money you would consider spending on a new outfit on some accessories to go with it (chunky jewellery or something ) but only stuff you could imagine wearing with other outfits so it’s not a waste.

llamalines · 01/10/2024 01:11

Definitely the all black one for an evening do. It's the most flattering too.

Rina66 · 01/10/2024 05:41

What about a co ord black waistcoat and black wide leg trousers? It will look like a jumpsuit when it's on but you can wear both pieces individually? Something like this...

You look fab in the all black, team it with some fancy shoes- maybe strappy sandals if you're able to dance in them!

OopsieeDaisy · 01/10/2024 08:53

Another vote for number 3 - all black, that one looks great on you and a bit more evening-y than the others IMO.

IceIceBabyBump · 01/10/2024 10:16

Here are the shoe options - either strappy, heeled sandals or trainers. I would clean the trainers.

I'm just a bit concerned that the plain black is a bit boring?

black and white jumpsuit and add a chunky necklace and dancing sandals (gold? silver?).

do you want height and/or comfort? That is the only question to ask yourself

IceIceBabyBump · 01/10/2024 13:04

@curious79 Not too bothered about height.
I'm more concerned with being appropriately pitched. I wear some form of trainer basically every day of my life so sandals would look a bit more dressed up than usual.
