Ladies, What Do We Think Of This Dress?

I'm taking a trip to the Mid East and need something conservative. Finding it hard to come upon long sleeve maxi dresses and happened upon this one. Just looking for second opinions :) thx

I think the one the OP linked to is fine. It definitely hits the mark in terms of being covered and respectful, and culturally appropriate.

I cannot believe people are saying "looks like a dressing gown", then someone posts a pink monstrosity which looks like a nightie, but worse.

Is it a business trip or holiday?

Holiday :) I have family there.

It does look a bit like a dressing gown. It's ok, but seen better.

I'd go for Cabbages & Roses or Alemais or Pink City Prints

Jesus, I've just tried to type a non offending reply about 4 times, but can't do it. 1950s nightgown, but even that feels awful to say.

Have you been before?

Many times. It's a beautiful country, but sadly very misunderstood. I travel a lot and would have to say Saudi people are the absolute kindest, friendliest and most generous people I've ever met. I'm quite familiar with the culture, just looking for an excuse here to buy a new dress lol!

I lived there for years. That's why I was asking. Why don't you just get a nice abaya when there and wear it over your normal clothes ?

TimelyIntervention · 26/09/2024 23:57

I like it! I do think the belt spoils the look of it a bit, but I think it would be better without it anyway for Saudi. Neckline will depend on how it sits on you, easy enough to throw a light scarf over it. Also depends on the fabric.

Oh nice! I have some abayas I'll be bringing with me but I also wanted something a bit different/unique while still being modest.

Thanks! I agree.

Saudi has become a lot more modern, surprisingly. So showing a bit of neck should be fine. Last time I was there, I saw women walking around with just tshirts and skirts just covering the knee. I think I'd feel uncomfortable dressed that way as a foreigner though somehow haha

It's quite bright for out and about in Saudi - which area will you be in ? It will certainly be noticeable. Have a look at the AAB dresses with John Lewis although that's too nice to go to the supermarket in 😂

Oh, how pretty!

I'll be in Jeddah. There are lots of women wearing colorful clothing there. It's one of the more modern, open cities if you will.

Love the dress you posted for a night out. Though women tend to wear fancy stuff like that even just to the mall.. Arab women can be quite over the top when it comes to fashion lol

Indeed what is beneath an abaya is often outrageous 😂

KaneelStokjes · 27/09/2024 00:12

It looks like a dressing gown... there are Abaya stores online... Would that work? Might help to blend in better?

This is my experience too. I feel so drab and frumpy and prim around these women!

LadyGAgain · 27/09/2024 00:17

I'm late to the party. I love it. I love the kaftan look. Glam it up with gold jewellery - any jewels actually! It's the perfect platform for party or less so. (And if you go all out with some make up - think eyes and sheen and gold...) then you're made!!

Love that idea! Thanks :)

Looks like a nightgown.

It lovely and I wouldn't ask anyone on MN for fashion advice. I've seen some shocking recommendations on here.

That is surprising. I hope this trend continues. Are you aware that women in Saudi and many other countries wore western clothing including mini skirts and could wear swimwear in public in the 1960s and 70s?

Mummyoflittledragon · 27/09/2024 09:04

I forgot to say, I don’t like the dress op. I prefer the Freeman’s one but if it suits you, why not?
