Do people actually wear these outfits?

I’m seeing lots of “autumn outfits” on social media like the attached eg a mini skirt with knee high boots. Generally no tights.

how do people pull this off?

I’m in my 20s and with toned legs, but feel like a mini skirt and knee high boots are like opposing seasons and it doesn’t look right on me. Eg it felt “too hot” to wear an outfit like that during summer due to the massive boots, yet “too cold” to wear an outfit like that now due to the skirts being super short. I also just feel like I’m not sure where I’d wear this to, the combination seems too dressy for daytime but too casual for nights out!

generally I have a hard time styling boots like this - is it certain items/fits that work best together? I’m short which doesn’t help.

Do people actually wear these outfits?

This is like, my dream outfit if I could fit in it and look good - you've totally ruined my get fit motivation now because you're right, where/when the hell would you wear it 😂

Idk. The influencers I follow who wear this getup tend to wear it for 'everyday' - aka shopping in selfridges, meeting with brands etc. all stuff the normal person does not do everyday!

Amongst the better dressed tourist / language student groups in my city I’ve seen plenty of young women in the boots and mini skirt combination over the last couple of months. Day and evening, including in a college chapel. It looks rather fine! (In contrast incoming undergraduates all seem to be in jeans or jogging pants.) Why not give it another try, now you can balance the boots with a warm and voluminous top?

I’m many decades older than you and would happily wear my cashmere shorts with tall boots - once I find the perfect upper half of the outfit.

The central photo of the ivory jumper and maxi skirt looks exactly like my favourite winter dress, which I wear with ankle or knee high boots.

henlake7 · 17/09/2024 16:02

TBH I think Ive only ever seen people wear knee high boots with either skinny fit trousers or longer skirts.

The only people who I ever see in mini skirts with bare legs in autumn/winter are school girls!
(and didnt we all dress weather inappropriate for school!!?LOL)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 17/09/2024 16:06

I don't have the legs for a mini skirt, but if I did, I'd happily wear that outfit with sheer or opaque tights in autumn. Not bare legs though.

mitogoshigg · 17/09/2024 16:07

I'd wear it with tights, flesh coloured at this time of year then thick when it gets cooler

JaneJeffer · 17/09/2024 16:08

Love the Shirley Manson look :) you can wear tights if it's too cold

Twoshoesnewshoes · 17/09/2024 16:12

I remember this look from…hmmm, 2006 ish?
im too old now but used to love it for work with thick woolly tights and a chunky cable knit jumper.

LoobyDoop2 · 17/09/2024 17:18

Just wear tights, like the photos in your post. I do agree with you that this happens a lot, though. Some people seem to be able to wear jumpers in summer and bare legs in winter and stay comfortable, but I can’t. I hate having the wrong clothes for the temperature in either direction.

OpalSquid · 17/09/2024 17:20

Knee high boots and mini skirts were my go to look in my late teens, with nude tights if it was desperately cold. Not sure I’d feel so confident at more than twice the age and size though.

WorriedRelative · 17/09/2024 17:20

Tights?

Justme10 · 17/09/2024 17:25

I love a mini skirt and boots in autumn/winter but I wear tights with it. If my legs weren't so pale I might consider missing the tights.

SovietSpy · 17/09/2024 17:44

I file a lot of the autumnal styling like this under ‘going for a posh roast dinner’ as I think that’s the only place I could imagine something like this working.
More generally, I see a lot of influencers advertising ‘looks’ that would be difficult to wear in reality. They clearly don’t go out in the wind and rain, work an office etc. So often I’m like ‘love that outfit’ then realise I would have no where to wear it and it’s completely impractical 🤣

Onwardsandsidewaysyetagain · 17/09/2024 18:08

My 18 year old dresses like this! Very long skirts or very short skirts. Nothing in between, tights when the weather gets chilly.

I used to wear minis back in the day and love the oversized jumper plus mini look, it's a bit full on say for an office job, my daughter wears this to college. Kilt type skirts are back in.

Chipsahoy · 17/09/2024 18:20

I am in my 40s and wear mini skirts and ankle boots. Sometimes I wear knee high. Different to these though, always with thick tights, as thick as leggings.
No tights or sheer tights are for skirts a little longer, at least at my age.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 21/09/2024 09:37

Opaque tights. Bare legs and boots looks weird. If it's cold enough for boots it's too cold for bare legs.

EatSprayGlove · 21/09/2024 09:40

This was my favourite outfit as a teen! I still have most of my boots but no longer wear them. I would say everyday outfit is fine but the school run would be frankly amazed if I turned up looking that put together!

Pinkissmart · 21/09/2024 09:41

Those lined tights that are flesh coloured? Is that how they wear it in the winter without freezing?

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 21/09/2024 09:54

I wear mini skirts and knee high boots(tend to be flat these days as more practical) although not micro mini skirts just a bit too old these days. I do wear opaque tights with them.

I don't do ankle boots as they make my legs look stumpy.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 21/09/2024 10:00

Tights give it an entirely different look and feel. Knee high boots and bare legs look bloody awful imvho.

Agreed. It reminds me of when my son was a teenager and nothing, no matter what the weather, would make him and his friends wear anything over his school blazer - as if not being cold and wet was uncool.

Changingplace · 21/09/2024 10:08

I’m absolutely loving that knee high boots & mini skirts are back :) I’d always wear tights though, not bare legs, I think that’s a look that influencers show off but wouldn’t really work in real life.

henlake7 · 21/09/2024 10:10

The one I never understand is 'giant puffer coat and shorts'. I sometimes see this look, often with hood up and it totally baffles me!
Surely one half of you is always too cold or hot!?

Im def not on the wavelength of young, trendy influencers. They always seem to have immaculate beige homes to match their oversized, beige athleisure wear.
Meanwhile my wardrobe is heaving with prints and patterns and I will change my style on a daily basis!😄

dinmin · 21/09/2024 10:14

Yeah I also don’t understand where there are so many trends that would leave you booking on the top half and freezing on the bottom half! Tiny shorts with big jumpers / sweatshirts / jackets etc. do they have legs that are immune to the cold?!

Willyoushutthefrontdoor · 21/09/2024 10:24

I love this look. I'd deffo still wear it...though not as short on the skirt as I'm 51! Sometimes tights. Sometimes not. For my 50th day out in autum couple uears ago with the girls i wore a fitted plain dress above knee with a belt on and knee length flat boots, no tights, with a wool single breasted long beige coat over the top. My knees never got cold 🤣🤣

blackcherryconserve · 21/09/2024 10:25

When I was 15, many moons ago, I used to wear my mini skirts with knee high boots whenever I wasn't at school. I especially remember a very warm September wearing them and having a row with my mother about my outfit. She couldn't understand why I'd wear boots when the weather was warm!
If you've got the legs and are under 25 years old, go for it.
