How much do you spend on yourself each month?

DYIDIY · 11/09/2024 17:33

Clothes, accessories, skincare etc.
I used to overspend but have become frugal over the years and now I struggle to treat myself to nice things sometimes. I hve a bit of an expensive taste and I need a lot of new things which means I’d have to spend quite a lot and don’t want to.
Curious to see what other people habits are. Appreciate income and other expenses make a difference obv

I used to spend literally next to nothing. We've got 3 kids so with nursery fees and maternity leaves we didn't have much of a disposable income. We're in a better place now and im really trying to focus on myself more by revamping my wardrobe and showing myself some self love by investing in my skincare regime.

I would say I spend around a couple of hundred a month on clothes/beauty. I actually spent around £100 today in M&S on a new Argyle jumper and some moisturiser and face oil.

Thinking of getting some Uggs next month- I last owned a pair back in 2007 and they didn't last too long. Can't help but feel it's a lot of money for something that won't stand the test of time. They were just SO comfy.

notaurewhatusername · 11/09/2024 17:40

Too much! About £500 a month until last month I found I'm pregnant lol so it ends there, this month I've spent about £100 but I'm on holiday so figured I can treat myself ☺️

MsPolly · 11/09/2024 17:42

@Hawkerslife i feel like the quality of uggs have gone down so much recently. I've got slippers and they just seem to be wearing out so much quicker

hby9628 · 11/09/2024 17:45

Depends. Each month I try to stay strong but I get swayed. This month it's been about £200 on clothes & skincare
I also fancy some uggs! I was just talking to my sil about this today. I've had a shite couple of months so feel like I need treats
I am also very good at putting stuff we don't use on Vinted though so that makes me feel a little better

This is what im worried about.

Are your slippers the ones that everyone is wearing out the house as normal shoes? The Croc style ones? I do really like those but I think I'd look like an idiot - I don't feel trendy enough!

FirstTimeHomeowner · 11/09/2024 17:47

Not enough - maybe £50/60 a month if that 😅 IDK why I have a mental block on spending on clothes/beauty stuff for myself. Happy treating myself to literally anything else 😏

Garlictest · 11/09/2024 18:23

Clothes + accessories + personal care = £313.71 per month average This is far too high for me, I went overboard last month 😬 Frugality awaits! At least I'll look nice while being frugal.

If you want the good stuff with less expenditure, OP, can you wait for the sales? Although Black Friday isn't supposed to be about clothes & skincare, etc, discounts do ramp up around the end of November, then again after Christmas. A lot of stores have permanent sales online, even for designer stuff, so you should rarely have to pay list price for anything 😊 <-- this is me encouraging you to shop while I can't!

LadyKenya · 11/09/2024 18:32

I would say under £40 per month. It could be less. I have bought a few items from my local charity shop recently. But I mostly buy books. I keep my clothes for years, the same goes for shoes, and boots. I have always been rather frugal, I would say. If I needed a new coat, for example, I would wait for the sales.

BlueLimeRun · 11/09/2024 18:35

About £200 a month but sone months little then a splurge.

EmeraldDreams73 · 11/09/2024 18:37

Actually for myself in terms of clothes/makeup etc? Nothing at all most months. A few times a year maybe £30 on Vinted. I have plenty of skincare from when I used to sell Temple Spa and maybe twice a year I'll buy, say, a new £10 mascara or bronzing powder.

Genuinely nothing else of that sort, but I do buy the odd magazine or bunch of flowers (if they're reduced!). If we have anything spare it tends to go on the house, but only the odd £50 here and there.

I absolutely cannot wait till I have some disposable income, it's been a long time.

Back21970 · 11/09/2024 18:39

My budget is around £300 a month Including haircuts and my £25 Liberty Beauty drop subscription.

Some months it’s way over though, very seldom less.

Buy a lot less clothing now than I did a few years ago though (and mostly Vinted) but skincare and makeup prices seem to have increased a lot.

If I need anything I do always try and look due for discounts or points events so it’s less painful.

PoshTosh · 11/09/2024 18:41

Gym membership £100pm, hair or clothes £50, coffees out £50

Putmeinsummer · 11/09/2024 18:42

Get Celtic and Co boots, emu boots or 'uggs since 1974' ones

mushpush · 11/09/2024 18:44

Oh my gosh, probably £500+. Includes nails, hair, Botox, skincare, makeup, clothes etc

Doesn't include accessories or shoes - I'm not averaging out my handbag purchases 😂

Dolliesdisasterousdayout · 11/09/2024 18:44

Around £400 a month but that’s clothes, shoes, make up, toiletries, hair, gym, PT, flowers, Liberty box.

It took me years to spend anything on myself.

MsPolly · 11/09/2024 18:55

@Hawkerslife mine are proper indoor slippers so couldn't get away with wearing them as shoes 😂

The cost just seems mental. I keep seeing the dupes on TikTok shop that are real suede but just don't have real sheepskin in them. Considering them. I've heard that it's actually UGG since 1974 that are proper UGG boots and the others are made in America.

Sanch1 · 11/09/2024 19:03

£400 give or take. Hair, nails, PT, clothes, meals/lunches with friends.

GettingStuffed · 11/09/2024 19:39

Probably about,£40. That's my tret prescription plus whatever I need. I rarely wear makeup so that's not an expense for me. I am a bit of a clothes horse though so some months I cost.a bit more

Hugmorecats · 11/09/2024 19:44

£50-£100 on average. I get my hair cut once to twice a year and use box dye once a month. Skin care is cheap moisturiser. No botox, no nails. Buy some clothes or shoes in the sales now and again. I do an exercise class which works out at about £40 a month. Running around after two kids = free.

MiddleAgedDread · 11/09/2024 19:45

sports massage once a month £60
gym membership £62 a month
haircut about once every 6months £55
running trainers last about 3months £120
probably have dinner out about once a month £50 and occasional coffee/cake/drink at the pub etc at weekends
clothes and shoes as needed, can go for months without buying new stuff
don't wear make up or do nails
toiletries are mostly from Aldi!

Isometimeswonder · 11/09/2024 19:47

For those thinking of Uggs, try Bearpaw. A Canadian brand. Similar shape to Uggs but I think look nicer.

Mooneywoo · 11/09/2024 19:47

£300 ‘personal money’ to spend on the odd coffee, clothes, makeup, hair, phone, a yoga class etc.
Honestly this is a bit tight for me but it’s a mat leave amount and can’t increase until I’m back to work.

DGPP · 11/09/2024 19:48

£500 a month

SparrowFeet · 11/09/2024 19:53

I have a budget for 'beauty' which ends up on average £200 a month - hair, nails and skin care/ aesthetics. I tend to stick to it and only spend if there is money in the pot. I realise it's a lot but clothes is hardly anything as I buy and sell on Vinted so try to sell before I can buy.

In an ideal world I'd actually add a bit more to the pot but I'm pretty strict on envelope style budgeting and I don't want to take from the other envelopes!

dudsville · 11/09/2024 20:03

I don't have a monthly spend. I do buy nice things; good hair and skin care, nice clothes, but I don't window shop. I have a few specific items that I buy from specific brands. I wait to top up my products until they're on sale, and my clothes too.
