How much do you spend on yourself each month?

DYIDIY · 11/09/2024 17:33

Clothes, accessories, skincare etc.
I used to overspend but have become frugal over the years and now I struggle to treat myself to nice things sometimes. I hve a bit of an expensive taste and I need a lot of new things which means I’d have to spend quite a lot and don’t want to.
Curious to see what other people habits are. Appreciate income and other expenses make a difference obv

£300 is what I'm giving myself a month atm and I'm maxing it. Between gym and sports memberships, Botox, hair, nails and skincare it doesn't go as far as I'd like!

Doggymummar · 11/09/2024 20:10

New hair extensions tomorrow about £400 Hair cut and colour £150 maybe £200. Nails £70. Mounjaro £150 gosh it all adds up doesn't it!

JLT24 · 11/09/2024 20:12

Basic toiletries £20
Skincare £35
Haircare £20 products + £80 hairdresser = £100
Nails + brows £45
Makeup £50
Clothes £200
Massage £50
Supplements £50
Going out - £250 (meals, coffees, cinema, theatre, live music, festivals, spa days)
Total £800

I also save £250 a month for travelling

‘Free hobbies’ - library for books, you tube for yoga, pilates, music & meditations. Podcast app. Instagram for cooking/baking recipes.

I spend a lot! I absolutely love clothes and my tastes have got more expensive over the years. My favourite retailer at the moment is Me and Em which is not cheap. So between this and other clothes and skincare and make up and Botox and haircuts etc etc etc I probably spend £1000 a month 😲

zebranotzeebra · 11/09/2024 20:22

I got married in the summer so spent more than usual on the run up. Trying to get back to normal now. Don't exactly know amounts so these are best guesses!

Lip wax once a month £10
Haircut every 3 months £40
Skincare I replace as it finishes, I use q&a cleansers which are about £7 and byoma products which are all around £15 so not huge amounts.
Bought a lot of nice make up for the wedding so won't be spending anything on that for the foreseeable!
£12 per month for an online workout subscription.
Clothes - varies. I'm guilty of buying too much but mostly on Vinted so it's not too expensive.
Think that's about it!

standardmum · 11/09/2024 20:46

£75 per month gym which includes unlimited classes, sauna, jacuzzi etc plus discount on spa treatments.
Haircut £40 every two months at a walk in place although I may try somewhere a bit fancier next time as I fancy a change. I've done my own colour for years same with nails, brows and lash tint etc.
A facial/ massage when the gym has a special offer maybe 4 x year
I'm using up my beauty and toiletries stash at the moment so probably £40 per month topping it up
I buy quite a few clothes from Vinted or charity shops plus the odd new item so probably averages £80 per month
I suppose it adds up to about £250 per month

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/09/2024 20:48

It really varies here. This month I’ve bought a couple of jumpers and a cardigan, and some leopard print jeans, but that is new season excitement and not usual. Skincare is all Inkey List and Cerave so not expensive and I replace as needed, makeup I use more high end products, but again replace as needed. I do my own nails, look after my salon’s social media so don’t pay for hair - the only regular beauty expense I have is £16 for eyebrows every three weeks.

Onlyonlyonly · 11/09/2024 21:00

Those who spend a lot, do you find that friends and family comment on it, or on your appearance?

I don't use any skincare or have haircuts or buy clothes so I only pay for basic toiletries. I wanted to buy sandals in the summer but couldn't find a pair I liked.

I have noticed I get funny little comments if I do buy something and it puts me off making any effort because I am setting myself up for ridicule.

YogaForDummies · 11/09/2024 21:12

I try not to spend much but clothes are my downfall, I probably spend between £100-200 per month which is a lot for me. Cosmetics- I only use them sparingly, so I'd say on average about £20 a month on those. I spend much more on days out and eating out as I live in a city and there's always something on / people to catch up with.

eggandchip · 11/09/2024 21:14

I dont keep count tbh.

endofthecorridoor · 11/09/2024 21:18

I have a 300 "allowance " as does DH.
Covers Botox and facials clothes and skincare monthly just about.
Rarely do nails and occasional eyebrow/lash treatment
I have friends that probably spend more on hairdressers and nails and lashes et as they are more regular and regular clothes and going out costs. I've found that my spend makes more actual difference and less clothes but better quality these days

I love this! It makes me feel less guilty that you're spending twice as much as my DH goes on, and on about my spending habits 🙄😂

Makelikeatreeandleaf · 11/09/2024 21:58

My perfume is about £100, so maybe 3 or 4 of those a year. Skincare/makeup minimal. Haircut maybe once a year if that, though that's relatively expensive. So that averages around £40 or £50/month, although some months I spend £0. Clothes - I generally don't buy if I don't need, so can buy nothing for months.

Lostmum1906 · 11/09/2024 22:08

It used to be a lot... and now about 30 pounds max! As I don't even think about myself now given I have a child and am a lone parent

Trainerstrainers · 11/09/2024 22:37

@Onlyonlyonly friends might say they like something etc but my friends have known me for a long time & I’ve liked/had nice things since I was a child.

What comments do people make to you?

fridaynight1 · 11/09/2024 22:44

I'm low maintenance. £40 for a haircut every 8 weeks. Don't do beauty or wear makeup. I've enough clothes and shoes to last forever. Shampoo, soap, bubblebath, toothpaste etc is all shared. Nights out with DH are few and far between and he pays. The cat costs more than I do 😋

EveryDayisFriday · 11/09/2024 22:54

I reckon around £200pm. I don't have expensive tastes but have built up beauty treatments that were once rare and are now regular. Hairdressers every month for roots and blow dry/ Nails every 3 weeks/ Brazilian wax every 6 weeks/ lashes, HD brows and a massage every 8 weeks/ pedicure with chiropodist every 8 weeks/ botox everyb9 months. Gym membership £21pm. I have just stopped my weight loss meds at £100pm.

Clothes and skincare, I'm happy to buy cheap and on sale/ discounted where I can. Don't mind dupes from Aldi etc.

This all sounds very depressing and distressing @Onlyonlyonly. You are presumably an adult? Do you not have any money of your own? If you do (you mention planning to buy sandals) why do you not feel free to exercise any free will?

Adults have groomed and enhanced and dressed themselves for pleasure across all of human history. It’s a perfectly healthy and life affirming pursuit - and awful to think you feel completely excluded from any of this activity because of the anticipated reaction of people who are supposed to care for and uplift you.

Is it that these people are envious of you? Or do they fear losing control of you?

Gawjus · 11/09/2024 23:03

£2.99 a month on a pot of Nivea night face cream.

peakybee · 11/09/2024 23:33

Not enough to satisfy myself that's for sure!

Coffeeandgranola · 11/09/2024 23:35

For myself I budget monthly:

  • £130 for Botox, skincare and facials
  • £100 for work lunches and coffees
  • £400 for socialising with friends and general spending - weekend activities, meeting up for meals, clothes and makeup, etc
  • £40 yoga
  • £200 clothes
  • £100 for house things - candles, bath goodies, new towels or nice bedding, etc
  • £a couple hundred ish away for girls' weekends - a city break or nice spa overnight a couple times a year.

£1,100 - 1,300 per month.

Actual spend each month is variable for some categories, but I don't struggle to spend the budget every year!

Friendofdennis · 12/09/2024 00:19

Vitamins and supplements £15 per month
perfume 2 to 3 expensive bottles per year so average of £20 per month
clothes on sale or from charity shops or tk maxx. Average £20 per month
toiletries and make up £20 per month
Gym membership £35 Total £110. Plus occasional spa days

bravotango · 12/09/2024 08:30

Pretty much nothing. Every few months or so I might spend £1-150 ISH in one go

Roystonv · 12/09/2024 08:42

Does my nightly glass of wine count as spending on myself (dh does not partake)? If so then under £50 depending on Aldi offers. Has started to piss me off that dh gets £325 pm mainly for golf but we are retired and can't match that for me and he loves playing meanwhile I have no hobbies/desires.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 12/09/2024 08:49

@Roystonv That's not on, can you talk to him about it? You can alternate months and use your month to sign up for a wine-tasting class Wine
