How much do you spend on yourself each month?

DYIDIY · 11/09/2024 17:33

Clothes, accessories, skincare etc.
I used to overspend but have become frugal over the years and now I struggle to treat myself to nice things sometimes. I hve a bit of an expensive taste and I need a lot of new things which means I’d have to spend quite a lot and don’t want to.
Curious to see what other people habits are. Appreciate income and other expenses make a difference obv

I'm mid 30s and a lot of us do it 😬

MyStylish40s · 13/09/2024 20:29

I’m detailing the thread now (maybe we should start a new one) but I’ve just googled “Botox before and after” and it’s impossible to see any difference in google images, mostly because people are frowning in the “before” pics.

Do people really notice a difference and is it worth the money? I’m guessing yes, or you wouldn’t be doing it!

Darklane · 13/09/2024 20:39

I agree with a pp about Bear Paw boots. I’ve some that have lasted years, long after my Uggs fell apart, & still look almost new.
I used to spend a lot, too much so I’ve got wardrobes full to bursting of lovely things from when the high street used natural fibres in classic styles so now spend almost nothing, shop my wardrobe instead. Now most of my spending is on expensive paraphanalia & shampoo & conditioner for the dogs, human toiletries pale into insignificance price wise! 😂

treeindigo · 13/09/2024 20:43

@MyStylish40s in my experience it's the only thing that religiously works, it's more a case of how long rather than "if", some people seem to manage months and months between appointments whereas others need to go 12 weeks religiously.

fiddleleaffig · 13/09/2024 20:45

Oh way too much. After all my bills and savings go out, I have about £800 spare. Some of this is used on the dc, a bit on coffee shops etc. but I probably spend about £500 purely on treating myself, including hair, nails, lashes, skincare, clothes.

sunshinechaser · 14/09/2024 08:11

@MyStylish40s Botox makes you unable to form the wrinkle between your eyes to frown so the after photos you are seeing are the women trying to frown but can't! It completely takes away those '11s' lines between your eyebrows and crows feet at the side of your eyes. It also removes dynamic forehead lines but I have a fringe so I never get it in my forehead.

Expenditure is normally about £100 - £200 I think. I do try & offset this by ebaying. My hair is highlighted every 6 months at £114. No Botox ever & I've given up on gel nails etc. Skin care is mainly Cerave & Clinique due to allergies & no expensive serums apart from Rosehip Oil.
My weakness is Knitwear- mainly Cashmere. I do try & buy new off eBay, but I'm highly susceptible to Tk Maxx bargains. A Pangaia zip up thick Brown Cashmere pullover was this week's deal. It's been so cold I wore it last night.

MetaDaughter · 14/09/2024 09:05

Does your Pangaia knitwear come without the inescapable logo, @Cantonet? I’ve liked the look of their leisurewear for a while, but everything is plastered with their name - so un-buyable, by me, at least.

Cantonet · 14/09/2024 09:10

It's this @metadaughter so not really too obvious.

Usually around £300.

FirstTimeHomeowner · 11/09/2024 17:47

Not enough - maybe £50/60 a month if that 😅 IDK why I have a mental block on spending on clothes/beauty stuff for myself. Happy treating myself to literally anything else 😏

me too. Did you have trauma or grow up in poverty?

GameOfJones · 27/01/2026 07:44

Probably around £250 a month on average.

Hairdresser appointments average out at £50 a month. I go every couple of months for a cut and a straightening treatment every six months. I don't colour it as I'd rather have smooth, greying hair than the frizzy mess it used to be but dyed.

Beauty appointments probably £50 on average too. I go every six weeks to the beautician and vary what I have done....pedicures in the summer months, facials in the winter, eyebrows occasionally.

My yoga classes work out at £50 a month.

Then £100 a month on miscellaneous stuff. I try not to buy too many clothes and have a one in, one out policy so often it's £0 on clothes in a month but then I'll need something and I don't mind spending. I do use Vinted and charity shops a lot though.

This month I needed a new perfume and got it for £50 in the sale.

I don't spend a huge amount on skincare as I have specific products I use and none of them are expensive. I am running out of my evening serum so just replaced that which was £10.

I wear makeup every day but it lasts ages. Again I'm reasonably minimalist as I have specific products I like and use most days so it depends what needs replacing. If it's my favourite mascara, tinted lip balm, eyeliner or blusher that's less than £10 but if I need to replace my CC cream, concealer or powder that's £30 or so. But I use them up before repurchasing......my concealer lasts me about 2 years!

HarvestMouseandGoldenCups · 27/01/2026 08:51

After bills, food and transport DH and I get £300 each purely for luxuries (clothing, gym classes, tech, books etc) Although I’ve spent at least half of that on gifts for DH for the last 3 months 🙃🙄

nondrinker1985 · 27/01/2026 08:57

£50-£60isg - mortgage bills and £4,500 in school fees a month mean little free cash - but we are fed, if I need something I look on Vinted, I box dye my grey hair! I still manage to see friends for coffees odd lunch. I don’t feel deprived.

nondrinker1985 · 27/01/2026 08:57

Oh £18 PureGym membership too in that

coolcahuna · 27/01/2026 09:01

I give myself a £500 budget which covers all clothes, any coffees, lunches out etc. I buy and sell alot in Vinted and Ebay as well which helps, I tend to buy second hand clothes and don't go wild at all on make up etc.

noramoo · 27/01/2026 15:51

Hmm around £60 on nails (2x appointments a month), £300 ish on clothes, £50-100 on makeup and skincare, £100-150 on yoga/pilates. I'm a 30 year old mum of one in London.

ZenZazie · 27/01/2026 15:55

Normally £100-150 a month on beauty and skincare. Clothes I tend to buy in bursts a few times a year, usually around sales.
