Help me smell expensive

I've been upgrading my wardrobe to 'quiet luxury' type brands via Vinted. V satisfying.

I've got a birthday coming up and I want a perfume (or dupe of a perfume) that whispers-not-screams expensive. I lean towards woody scents, if that's any help.

Thank you, perfumistas

Le Labo number 29

KenMastersGoldBracelet · 11/09/2024 16:30

Thank you everyone so far! This is making me want to go wild in Liberty's perfume department

L'Air Du Temps - Nina Ricci
Amber Kiso - DS & Durga
Miss Dior - Dior
Eau Dynamisante - Clarins
Coco - Chanel
Un Jardin a Cythere - Hermes (really anything by Hermes tho)
any of the woody Aesop ones

SpanielPaws · 11/09/2024 16:34

Anything from Chanel, Tom Ford, Creed, Hermes?

Less is more - don't drown yourself in it but don't get a dupe - anyone with a perfume nose can tell!

potplantsinparadise · 11/09/2024 16:39

Oh, 'Bowmakers' by DS & Durga is also super luxurious and woody, but very expensive, so worth tracking down a sample.

Zara perfumes often are dupes of designer ones, I often find they hold quite good for most of the day - graziadaily.co.uk/beauty-hair/makeup/zara-perfume-designer-dupes/

Generally anything that ‘can often be found at a discount’ is going to smell dated and therefore the opposite of luxurious.

Luxury implies an awareness of and engagement with the zeitgeist.

(I took an even then discounted bottle of Hermes Caleche up to university with me at the start of my undergraduate years. I’m a few years short of retirement now …)

Definitely not from Tom Ford. Vulgar and too in-your-face.

31 Rue Cambon, Chanel

I've just bought Straight to Heaven by Kilian. It is indeed heavenly!

Ahh this is the second time I have heard this perfume mentioned recently... I am very curious to smell it.

My current perfume obsession is Trussardi Aperitivo Milanese Porta Nuova. I love it!!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 11/09/2024 16:51

Féminité du Bois, if you like cedar.

TheRozzers · 11/09/2024 16:52

Ambre Magique, woody, sexy and expensive.

£265 a bottle maybe try 30mls first

Le Labo for woody, musky scents. I love Another 13, and have a few of the other scents in tester size. They last a few months if used sparingly.

Absolutely. There used to be a reason dupes are cheap. They use cheap synthetic fragrances to mimic the real thing. But they give me a headache.

gardenmusic · 11/09/2024 18:25

If you like Chanel 5, you may like Coty Laimont, which smells quite similar.

Thursdaygirl · 11/09/2024 18:37

People tell me I smell amazing when I wear Jo Malone, my current favourite is Cypress Grapevine, crisp, clean and gorgeous

Puppylucky · 11/09/2024 18:38

Off piste and maybe out of budget but La Flaneuse from Beauty Pie is gloriously woody but discrete

Mmmkaay · 11/09/2024 18:48

Noted Aromas do a dupe of Santal 33, which smells subtly expensive to me.

Auntieobem · 11/09/2024 18:53

M&S do a super of Jo malone - sea salt and neroli. It's v nice. graziadaily.co.uk/beauty-hair/makeup/marks-and-spencer-perfume-dupes/

rickandmorts · 11/09/2024 20:45

I wear Penhaligon's Halfeti for special occasions and it always smells expensive and classy to me!

fubared · 11/09/2024 20:50

The Noted Aromas dupes of Le Labo perfumes don't last 5 minutes (on me, at least)

DefyingGravitas · 11/09/2024 20:51

It’s not always / only ingredients that make dupes cheaper. You’re not paying for the packaging level, marketing spend, prestige brand and just the fact that they have higher prices for aspirational reasons.

DefyingGravitas · 11/09/2024 20:52

I also disagree that modern equals luxury. A number of classics also do.

LunaNorth · 11/09/2024 20:53

Le Labo Santal 33.

I get told I smell lovely pretty much every time I wear it.
