Help me smell expensive

I've been upgrading my wardrobe to 'quiet luxury' type brands via Vinted. V satisfying.

I've got a birthday coming up and I want a perfume (or dupe of a perfume) that whispers-not-screams expensive. I lean towards woody scents, if that's any help.

Less is more - don't drown yourself in it but don't get a dupe - anyone with a perfume nose can tell!

Oh, 'Bowmakers' by DS & Durga is also super luxurious and woody, but very expensive, so worth tracking down a sample.

Generally anything that ‘can often be found at a discount’ is going to smell dated and therefore the opposite of luxurious.

Luxury implies an awareness of and engagement with the zeitgeist.

(I took an even then discounted bottle of Hermes Caleche up to university with me at the start of my undergraduate years. I’m a few years short of retirement now …)

Definitely not from Tom Ford. Vulgar and too in-your-face.

Le Labo for woody, musky scents. I love Another 13, and have a few of the other scents in tester size. They last a few months if used sparingly.

Absolutely. There used to be a reason dupes are cheap. They use cheap synthetic fragrances to mimic the real thing. But they give me a headache.

If you like Chanel 5, you may like Coty Laimont, which smells quite similar.

People tell me I smell amazing when I wear Jo Malone, my current favourite is Cypress Grapevine, crisp, clean and gorgeous

Off piste and maybe out of budget but La Flaneuse from Beauty Pie is gloriously woody but discrete

Noted Aromas do a dupe of Santal 33, which smells subtly expensive to me.

I wear Penhaligon's Halfeti for special occasions and it always smells expensive and classy to me!

The Noted Aromas dupes of Le Labo perfumes don't last 5 minutes (on me, at least)

It’s not always / only ingredients that make dupes cheaper. You’re not paying for the packaging level, marketing spend, prestige brand and just the fact that they have higher prices for aspirational reasons.

I also disagree that modern equals luxury. A number of classics also do.
