Help me smell expensive

KenMastersGoldBracelet · 11/09/2024 13:20

I've been upgrading my wardrobe to 'quiet luxury' type brands via Vinted. V satisfying.

I've got a birthday coming up and I want a perfume (or dupe of a perfume) that whispers-not-screams expensive. I lean towards woody scents, if that's any help.

Thank you, perfumistas

Wood Sage & Sea Salt by Jo Malone might be a good shout? I had it a while ago and was frequently complimented on it.

MsTeatime · 11/09/2024 13:58

Which quiet luxury brands are you focused on adding to your wardrobe to give a better sense of the vibe the scent needs to match.

AngryLikeHades · 11/09/2024 14:02

Milton Lloyd does a very good dupe for Chanel no.5 called 'Vogue'. It's available on amazon and I'm addicted to it.

MetaDaughter · 11/09/2024 14:12

I also want to know what’s in your new wardrobe!

The fact that you’ve mentioned ‘dupes’ suggests you’re not totally committed to the luxury cause.

Uricon2 · 11/09/2024 14:13

Pretty much any Hermes.

MounjaroUser · 11/09/2024 14:14

I wouldn't go for a dupe, OP.

I'm another who wants to know which brands you're going for.

pinkyredrose · 11/09/2024 14:15

I've just bought Straight to Heaven by Kilian. It is indeed heavenly!

I've acquired some recently from Loro Piana, Loewe and Sunspel as well as some classic Italian tailoring. Lots of black, cream and beige. All natural fibres. That kinda thing

Budget? I'd suggest Diptyque Philosykos EDP.

spikeandbuffy · 11/09/2024 14:23

Byredo and Le labo always seem luxury to me

Mysterweepinata · 11/09/2024 14:24

I’d buy a few samples on eBay to see what you like.

Fabulous fragrance I’d recommend trying:- these are warm, expensive smelling scents

Tempo Diptyque
Molecule 02 Escentric Molecules
By the Fireside Replica

Luxury tastes on a dupe and second-hand budget I'm afraid!

I also look out for Jil Sander, Sandro, Khaite and Bevza

Le Labo Another 13

Ohmychristdawn · 11/09/2024 14:42

M and S do a Le Labo dupe in their apocathery range. It's gorgeous and £12 a bottle.

MotherWol · 11/09/2024 14:42

Aesop fragrances always smell expensive to me - that woody, resiny fougère type fragrance. M&S Warmth is a good bargain dupe (but less longevity). Sunspel Oak Wood would be another one along those lines - maybe look for a sample?

Whatineed · 11/09/2024 14:49

You can order Coffrets online and many companies give you a discount of the price of the Coffret on your first perfume order.

I've ordered from Jo Malone, the whole range in a Coffret from Celine and a few from Bibbi and Creed. There is usually enough to try for a few days to decide on the fragrance you like and they make handy travel bottles too.

SleepingisanArt · 11/09/2024 14:59

Hermes Elixir de Merveilles (parfum)

My daily perfume and I'm told often that I smell expensive (it was £110 when I bought it and it's £137 now but a little goes a long way!)

MetaDaughter · 11/09/2024 15:14

Ha! @KenMastersGoldBracelet in my previous, long ago professional life I wore Jil Sander straight off the rack, full price. (More fool me.) Now half of my wardrobe (mostly the Sofie D’Hoore / Margaret Howell half) comes via Vestiaire. So I’m impressed with your Vinted buys.

Perfume-wise I like some Frederic Malle, some Celine, a lot of Perfumer H. (Post-Covid I seem to be moving away from the jagged and unconventional towards smoothness.) If you have a look at the websites of:

Bloom Perfumery
Les Senteurs

you should be able to find some things you genuinely love.

Pippifer · 11/09/2024 15:17

Honestly I think no scent is more ‘quiet luxury’! Being doused in perfume is not nice.

I’d look at Zara perfumes though, a lot of them are dupes of high end ones and they last pretty well.

I've been told the same! Lovely perfume.

Abracadabra12 · 11/09/2024 15:27

I love Sunspel Sea Moss

SleepingisanArt · 11/09/2024 15:49

@Uricon2 - we have excellent taste! (Plus it's one of very few which actually stay on for more than 5 minutes!!)

@Pippifer - I use very little. I'm not doused in perfume and you certainly don't smell me coming! Some of us don't wear perfume like a bodyspray but if we go in for a hug, peck on the cheek or (horror of horrors) reach over someone then the other person gets a hint of the scent.

Aroastdinnerisnotahumanright · 11/09/2024 15:55

Hermes Calèche, woody and often can find at a discount. I like d&g The One but it's not really woody. Perhaps look at Prada iris cèdre too.
