What shoes to wear today to London with dress

I am wearing this with a black cardigan to London today to theatre, lunch and theatre. Not too much walking as taking elderly parents.

What shoes should I wear?
Thong sandles- smart sparkly
Pink Mary Jane's with strap.
Black Mary Jane's with strap
Pink trainers
Black ankle boots
Black knee length boots.

(The dress is a really light fabric. I am short and wide. I don't really have heels except in boots.)

For a second challenge I really want a going out jacket/coat to wear over dresses like this so I don't need a cardigan and will be near John Lewis later. Any suggestions - size 20 and 5ft 4)

Any help gratefully recieved from you lovely mumsnetters.

This waisted dress falls to a timeless midaxi length. It's cut to a comfy relaxed fit, and features an eye-catching all-over animal print. Three-quarter sleeves and ties at the round neck add a touch of elegance to the modern piece. M&S Collection:...

I think black Mary Jane's would suit and for a jacket maybe a black leather jacket if you've got one?

heldinadream · 07/09/2024 09:10

Top choice black ankle boots.
Second choice black Mary Jane's.
Definitely not feeling pink with that dress.
Jackets - will take a look and come back.
Have a lovely day - I'd love a day in London doing that kind of thing. 😍

You’ll want flat boots - so whichever of yours are not high heeled.

And probably a raincoat! (You may miss the rain in London today, but going forward …)

NigelHarmansNewWife · 07/09/2024 09:12

I'd want flattish, toe protection for busy places, especially the Tube (if relevant) and nothing my feet are going to get grimy in.

GinRummyandRaisin · 07/09/2024 09:16

If the ankle boot are flat then those. Otherwise black Mary janes

LauderSyme · 07/09/2024 09:17

Black Mary Jane's. I agree that pink doesn't match the dress and I feel like boots would look too heavy with that lightweight fabric.

John Lewis in Oxford Street has a fabulous selection of ladieswear, I am sure you will find something lovely. If you don't perhaps you could pop up the road to Selfridges.

Mumdiva99 · 07/09/2024 09:21

Thanks all. Decision made. Black Mary Jane's.

I will look later on train and see if there are any jacket suggestions.

You are superstars.

Plan for it to rain, so I'd wear the Mary Jane's as it's also going to be quite warm.

Coat wise I'd have a trawl round John Lewis but also pop across the road to Uniqlo to see if anything there fits the bill. As you have the type of dress on that you want it to go with it should be relatively easy to find something suitable.

RosesAndHellebores · 07/09/2024 09:27

Black ankle boots or black Mary Jane's. Not sure what the weather is like in London at the moment as we are away but the most comfy and be mindful of the crowds and getting your toes stepped on.

If you are in theatre land, the M&S at the Pantheon might be worth a visit as well as John Lewis.

EternallyDelighted · 07/09/2024 09:29

Black Mary Janes. I was in London for early dinner/theatre yesterday and took a thin coat coat because of the rain in the morning and light cardi for the theatre but was far too warm in the coat, I wore sandals and feet stayed warm.

Looked at John Lewis jackets @Mumdiva99 they have hundreds, but digging down lots of them are either rubbish (wisps of floral polyester chiffon) or online only.
Obviously it'll depend on what they have instore when you look today but I like this White Stuff jacket, in your size in the light natural colour, not sure how practical that is going out of summer into what already looks like winter!

And then there are a couple of Mango jackets might suit (but not sure how available sizes correspond to your size).

And a pink (ironically, in terms of what you could have worn today) White Stuff jacket with very good reviews that I think has a great cut/style.

But anyway it looks like JL defo worth a visit, especially if you can park the parents in the instore cafe with a cake and take an hour off and have a rummage?

Sadly lots of the bogstandard type jackets are polyester. I would avoid but maybe ok for you?

@heldinadream Thanks so much.

I went to m&s and tried on a few but nothing suitable.

I am going to look for the white stuff shacked tomorrow. (I do love pink and green....I'm suprised everyone said no to pink and leopard as I thought a pop of cerise was a good mix....but as my husband would say....don't ask for advice and ignore it.)
