Thick waist belt

Is it a terribly dated look now? I remember it being all the rage in the late noughties.

I've got a navy silk shirt dress I'd like to wear (out, out) but it's a loose fit. The thick belt accentuates my waist better than a thin one- that's giving me "sack of spuds tied in the middle" vibes- but I don't want to look dated. I don't go out much any more!

On the verge of ditching the outfit and going with a trusty dress but I'd like to wear something new. I've only recently figured out I'm an hourglass and after spending years hiding under baggy clothes it's taking a bit of bravery to embrace a fitted waist!

TIA

Well
I was just watching a YT video yesterday about how thick buckled or wrap belts are back this autumn to cinch in oversized jackets so definitely go for it.

If you have a look on Net-a-Porter you can see numerous extra wide belts, mostly Alaïa, with the odd McQueen, still looking cool and contemporary. (Besides which, the retro look is all the rage on red carpets everywhere.)

Really it depends on the exact items - a navy silk shirt dress sounds gorgeous; presumably your belt is of decent quality and will complement the dress? The outfit sounds absolutely fine in theory - if it looks good in your mirror then wear it with confidence.

Thanks both, that's reassuring!

It's a good quality leather belt- not designer or anything, but doesn't look cheap and plastic. It's a dark plummy/almost black colour and goes well with the navy, I'm just not sure about other accessories yet.. I'll have another try on and see if I can make it work comfortably.

@NahThen does it "work" for you? By the sound of it yes! Some ppl look great with wide belts (not me!) sounds like it accentuates your figure, wear what makes you feel good

Thank you @Thistooshallpass24 I think it does work for me- my waist is visible and it gives me a bit of shape.

I generally feel a bit awkward in my own skin at the best of times so trying "new" things is always a worry!

It is very late noughties but that’s the trend that’s coming through again, so you’d be bang “on trend”, if not slightly ahead of it. Wear the belt!

I have a ‘vintage’ 80s Next belt that is wide, tan leather and I’ve just started wearing it again. I use it with wide leg trousers to balance the widened. Belts are back big time.
