I’m coming up to my 43rd birthday. I’d love something sapphire like a ring but we can’t afford much what would you suggest with a £500-£1000 budget?

With that money I’d go away instead.

Justwanttosleep2 · 06/09/2024 15:08

You could easily find a ring at that price!

UnashamedLabelHo · 06/09/2024 15:08

This is quite classic - you could possibly negotiate (after trying it on). It depends on the shade of sapphire you want. But they’re around!

Oh thank you! Yes it’s just something I’ve wanted for such a long time as it’s my birthstone and I have another family connection to a sapphire,

But it want it to be quite bright and beautiful.

I would buy vintage (you could get something amazing for £500!) and put the rest toward dinner/night away!

DramaAlpaca · 06/09/2024 15:47

As someone else said above, go vintage. You'll get something beautiful for a really decent price.

bravotango · 06/09/2024 15:48

Definitely vintage - have a search on Etsy and filter to only show vintage items and the metal you want! Great budget for a gorgeous ring!

curious79 · 06/09/2024 16:15

You’ll get most bang for your buck buying at auction

PashaMinaMio · 06/09/2024 16:18

Buy the most blue sapphire you can afford.
Very dark blue stones don’t refract the light very well and are not as pretty.
Some of the fakes on sites recommended here are very nice. One never ever has to offer the information that it’s a lab grown stone. Just don’t!

Have a look at the diamond quarter birmingham if you can get there. I got a beautiful aquamarine and diamond ring for my 40th. Paid 700 and had it valued at over 3k. I tried on sapphires which were beautiful too.

I bought a huge lab grown emerald ring on betsy for £289 a couple of years ago. Look up lab grown.

herbygarden · 06/09/2024 16:28

Auction - you'll get a lovely sapphire ring for that!

Twoshoesnewshoes · 06/09/2024 16:31

Those saying buy at auction, can you link to a site please?

Struggling1981 · 06/09/2024 16:41

Thanks links welcome - yes maybe a trip to Birmingham is on the cards!!

I’ll look on Etsy too!

Don’t waste your money on a lab grown stone. They’re the latest con going but as valuable as a chunk of plastic in real terms! Get to the jewellery quarter and make a day of it!

ApexDragonfly · 06/09/2024 16:45

Have a look at your local auction house.

UnashamedLabelHo · 06/09/2024 17:32

You can’t resize the eternity ring and it’s for a slim finger but both of these blues are less inky!

Romantically meaningful crossover ring, some quite dainty earrings and an antique ring

I’m slightly addicted to Gemporia, which is relatively reasonably priced. They have a range of sapphire colours.

Make sure you click on the gemstone details section to check if it’s been treated (if that matters to you), and average metal weight (some of the cheaper gold rings have thin shanks), but you can still find some beautiful pieces. They frequently have special offers too.
