What shoes with dresses??

I have a party to go to this weekend and I always struggle with shoes! I'm wearing a dress (more on the casual side than full on glamour but still a nice one!) It's getting too cold for sandals, too dressy of an occasion for trainers and I no longer can't stand heels (late 40's). I know flat Mary Jane type shoes are back in but is anyone really doing those if you did them the first time and most just look cheap and like my feet have been run over. Has anyone cracked it??

Mary Janes creep me out somewhat with dresses, not so bad with trousers

Just a pair of flat shoes? Pumps or ballet flats or flat sling backs or whatever you like. Ankle boots can work depending on the dress.

Now 50 I can't wear heels any more, even the tiniest heel, but for some reason I can wear wedges. I've got a black suede pair which look good or in the summer if I can't wear sandals I I wear my LK Bennett espadrille type wedges (they are quite a few years old now). Not what I dreamt of when younger and could wear sky high heels but they do the job these days.

same - they look like child's school shoes with a dress! Boots aren't a bad idea - I've not done dress and boots but I usually think it looks nice on others. I've only got ankle boots tho??

Yes, I have some 'summer' wedges but it's cold and raining today - I feel like we are out of summer dressing now?!

Black wedges then. I have some suede ones that are good. I think I got them from John Lewis and they don't hurt my feet at all.

Like these but you could probably find better. Anyway personally I like the black heel and shoe rather than any wooden look.
