Stylish MNettters, what’s the verdict on Teddy coats?

Stylish women of MN, please help me! I was once “cool” but am now the cliche of the mum who has no idea what’s in anymore!

I’m thinking about a new autumn coat and would like something beige/brown. I like teddy coats but…
Are they still in/stylish/cool?
I’m mid 40s - is it too young a style for me now? (Yes we can all wear whatever we want bla bla, but some things just don’t work once you get older/pudgier…)

Any other Autumn trends to consider?

I know leopard print is having a bit of a moment again but I can’t decide if it’s for me. I loved the faded Hollywood vibe in my 20s/30s but not sure it might look a bit trashy on me now. (I’m sure others would pull it off, just not sure if I can!)

I’m a big fan of leopard print but it’s far too ubiquitous now so I have prefer other animal prints.

I’ve never been a huge fan of teddy coats, I prefer fake fur which I think is back again (never really goes) & I think of it as the slightly older version

Ooh, I had been wondering about the faux fur option too but hadn’t seen anything I liked.

Really like the fur answer to the Teddy coat. That second link is especially beautiful!

Teddy coats photograph well but in reality are often shiny polyester and sweaty to wear ( and smell weird !) but they are not warm imo

ThatPeachSnake · 29/08/2024 09:01

I’m not a fan of teddy coats!

what about a nice wool camel or brown coat? It’ll never be out of style.

Realitea · 29/08/2024 09:08

I’ve just bought a full length teddy coat 😬

thecrossIambearing · 29/08/2024 09:16

I'm putting mine on e bay in a few weeks. Not advertising. I've just had enough of it.

I feel like teddy coats are such an easy casual coat. They go with everything, and are perfect to nip to the shops/ school run.

I love a classic wool coat but I think a lot of styles don’t work well with casual/ jeans outfits.

Currently looking at other faux fur options too… although I’ve inevitably ended up looking at Shrimps which are amazing but I more of an investment than I was planning on 😬

I bought a 3/4 length Teddy coat from Boden sale about 5 years ago and I have compliments on it every winter.

Newposter180 · 29/08/2024 12:24

I feel like teddy coats have had their day. I quite like the second fur option linked above although in anything like that I always just feel huge/bulky!
I’d also go with a more classic wool coat. I guess it depends what your casual clothes are like but I think they’re lovely over jeans/jumpers/boots type outfits. Wool coats are also more casual if a little oversized rather than very fitted/belted - not the colour you’re after but this kind of shape maybe: www.cos.com/en_gbp/women/womenswear/coats-and-jackets/product.oversized-double-breasted-wool-coat-grey.1121928004.html

I have two from Uniqlo. On black and one to batch the dog 🐕 cocker poo camel

Yetanotherwittyname · 29/08/2024 17:31

So it sounds like the views on Teddy coats are varied enough to still be a solid option. A “wear whatever you want” rather than a “hell no”

I’d love to be able to do the oversized coat look but I think it looks better on taller women (I’m not petite short but shorter than average). I also have small/soft facial features so it’s taken me years to work out that big shapes and prints overwhelm me

They're a no for me, but I don't hate them on others.

Onehappymam · 29/08/2024 18:13

I find wool coats cumbersome and uncomfortable. I do a lot of driving and I’m always in the go. I’ve always found them to be a bit stiff if you know what I mean.

I bought a full length black teddy coat a few years ago and bring it out every winter. I love it! So comfy and easy to wear. I’ve also bought a short camel coloured on this year.

They’re not the warmest, but if it’s really cold I’d reach for something thicker that’s waterproof.

Pigtailsandall · 30/08/2024 15:32

OP, I've been wondering about this too. I had a teddy coat in my early 20s when I was all grunge, and I'm looking for a cleaner, more polished version of it. I'm quite tall but also, eh, increasingly pudgy. I haven't found one that hangs on me right yet.
