Guardian capsule wardrobe article - Mumsnet version?

Following on from the Guardian capsule wardrobe thread, what items could make a more affordable and practical version?

For me I would say:

Well cut jeans:
1 pair straight leg
1 pair wide leg
1 pair skinny
(2 blue, one black/grey)

A silk vest in cream and in white.

A Breton stripe t shirt (long sleeve)

Black leather Chelsea boots

... And several pieces more I still need to think about

I just started to do a generic mumsnet one but realised very quickly it depends on your lifestyle. An office worker, someone who works from home and someone who wears a uniform could be doing quite similar jobs in terms of sitting at a desk using the phone and computer but will have really different wardrobe needs. And then there are other people not doing those kinds of jobs!

I’ll come back later and do one just for me.

I don't think I could create a capsule wardrobe for me.
I have casual days where I dress down, other days I posh myself up (even if I'm only going to Tesco!). Sometimes I wear neutrals, other days it's full on colour and pattern.

How do people pare it down to just a few things?

I was picturing all the women of the UK only being allowed to wear the Guardian capsule wardrobe. What a dreary uninspiring sight. Give me a cupboard full of mismatching colour any day of the week.

Not a Mumsnet capsule, but I have been thinking a lot about the Guardian one and what I would have. I’m only thinking autumn/winter here, and tried to think of 20 items like the article had, based on stuff in my actual wardrobe.

I work four days a week as a lecturer in a creative subject, one of those from home, so this would cover me for work/not work, even though in realityI do tend to keep things separate. I don’t go out fancy places.

  1. Black Levi’s 90s 501 jeans
  2. Blue Levi’s “baggy dad” jeans
  3. Brown wide Hush cords
  4. White Arket crew neck t-shirt
  5. Black and white striped Cos t-shirt
  6. Grey Arket crew neck t-shirt
  7. Grey Alpaca knit Whistles cardigan
  8. Green (olive) Sezane chunky knit cardigan
  9. Black crew neck Cos cardigan (can be worn buttoned up as a jumper as well)
  10. Monki black and silver flock midi dress
  11. Cream alpaca knit Arket jumper
  12. Black and white Adidas Samba trainers
  13. White Adidas Samba trainers
  14. Black DM Church monkey boots
  15. Black Whistles leather jacket
  16. Long black Monki puffer coat with hood
  17. Grey &OS sweatshirt
  18. Birkenstock Boston clogs (not sure if I would have the black or the taupe pair)
  19. H&M long black satin slip skirt

I can’t remember if the article had bags in, so I am possibly cheating here - I’ll have my black leather Arket curved crossbody, and my woven oxblood Anthropologie crossbody.

I think I could mix and match a lot of outfits from that lot, although it would be boring and things like the tees would forever be in the wash. I’d need a selection of good accessories, and also stuff like joggers for round the house. I don’t have a dog so wouldn’t need wellies/waterproofs or anything for that.

Oh I only have 19! I’ll add another sweatshirt - a black Cos one.
