This used to be the kind of thing I aspired to - muted colours, limited choices. I think I thought it would make me look older and stylish.

I think I was afraid to take up space.

Now it would make be sad - I like bright things and patterns and funky things. Peri has made me bolder and I'm happier for it!

I try to get my stuff from ethical brands and I pick up clothes two or three times a year, so it's not fast fashion, but fun clothes make me happy.

That's where I don't think that money adds value though- a Breton top is not going to be £80 worth of better looking than a lower value one, it might be slightly nicer, or wash slightly better, but you'll look (in my case) like a middle-aged lady in a top with horizontal stripes that's quite out of fashion in the first place.

If you lack basics, you need to go where the money has added value- so leather shoes and bags, a coat with wool in it (almost impossible to find now, they are all polyester sweat-traps). I do that off Vinted as I can't bear paying £100's for something that is worse quality than what I used to buy in Dorothy Perkins 25 years ago.

Re the breton top and the white trainers, the blazer and the cigarette trousers, these look a bit like the sort of middle class , Mumsnet mummy clothes worn by middle class Mumsnet mummy types which other Guardian writers like to sneer at.

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle I'll confess to having several Breton tops in different colours which I wear with jeans and trainers. I don't have a blazer though. Am I a lost cause? 🤣

Mummy clothes. What are they exactly? Do only middle class mums wear trainers?

There's certainly a lot of sneering on this thread and not from Jess Carter Morley either.🙄

I think you've missed my point. I wasn't sneering at anyone but I've seen Guardian writers sneering about MN.

But that's the trouble with fashion, isn't it?

Here are some lovely clothes you can buy. They will make you elegant and lovely and help you live an exciting life

Hurrah! We chorus, en route to buying a cheaper version, I can buy happiness!

Oh no, say the fashion gods in dismay, now they all look like us and we're not special. Quick- tell them those trousers are the wrong shape and that only mums wear them.

Nooooo, we cry as one, remembering how desperately mumsy our mums looked and how much joy we found in being young and cool and not like them.

And so the cycle continues. Unless I want my daughter's capsule wardrobe of crop top, nike pro, converse, Nike top. Big bow.

I think it was a poor and unimaginative article and very lazy writing. I mean I agree that a good wool coat, a trenchcoat and good quality ballet flats will take you a long way. They've been in my wardrobe for at least the last 30 years.

And as for suggesting a white shirt, good grief.

ABirdsEyeView · 27/08/2024 22:32

People who suit white shirts, seem to think that white shirts suit everyone. They scream waitress to me. Except for the soft loose ones that you wear on the beach or undone over a t shirt. I don't think they are a capsule wardrobe essential, since they suit so few women.

User14March · 28/08/2024 09:19

Pregnant Margot Robbie is rocking white shirt chic in press today.

ABirdsEyeView · 28/08/2024 10:48

Tbf, she'd look good in a sack

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 28/08/2024 10:53

No less than two formal jackets-a blazer and a Chanel one-but only one pair of jeans, one jumper and one dress? It seems odd to me.

Pinktruffle · 28/08/2024 11:05

That is the most joyless wardrobe I've ever seen. Utterly boring and devoid of personality and joy.

User14March · 28/08/2024 11:37

@ABirdsEyeView indeed
