Quality basic t-shirts

I'm doing a wardrobe purge and getting rid of all the crappy clothes I have that I just don't wear any more. I want to get some nice new basics that are good quality and will last. I'm fed up of buying t-shirts or tops that fit at first and then shrink or warp.
my DS has nice T-shirts from Uniqlo but I can't find anything there that I like really. I'm tall, big boobs and size 18 so I'm looking for things that skim over rather than clingy ones

I’m afraid I have to agree about Uniqlo. I have been trying to accept this new world order since lockdown - but I was in one of their physical shops recently and all the polyester / cotton jersey items were quite horrifyingly thin. Really unsatisfactory and definitely not made to keep anyone warm.

Cos and Arket are your friends here. They both have well-made heavyweight Ts wiith sleeves in a decent length too (a bugbear of mine is that cheap T shirts have those very short short sleeves - I like them to come halfway between shoulder and elbow). Autograph at M&S too.

Rapanui.

Though not sure for a size 18. Worth a try though.

H and M are actually excellent for some basics. The long sleeve ribbed modal tops are such good quality and have a really good cotton ratio. I find some of the clothing much better quality than places like reformation which are now mostly polyester, H & M have v good linen/wool/cotton if you look carefully and are often very well cut

I really like this one:

I think an Arket large is a size 16, but this is quite oversized - I'd size down for this one.

I second Rapanui. Super quality, range of styles, fits & colours, ethical and they accept cotton garments from any label to recycle for £5 credit per order, per item. It doesn't cost anything to send them your garments for recycling either.

Sizes from 8 to 18, although some styles go up to size 24.

I like Kettlewell. Lovely quality and a huge range of styles and colours.

What are the Arket normal t-shirts like, do you know? The heavyweight one sleeves are too long for me but the ordinary ones look great

Love the look of these! And partnering with Quarry Bank mill (near where I grew up so have been there many times) AND Esme from Sewing Bee!! I'm sold!

I've been in a Cos store a few times and never found anything appealing in there, it's all very drab and utilitarian. I'm more of a joyful, bright colours kind of person. But their T-shirts do look really good quality online

Look in the men’s section. Ds and I both have basics from the same shop but the men’s version is often thicker and better quality. Last time I bought basics at primark, the cashier told me to always get the men’s version of basics as they are longer lasting and better quality.

Summerdew · 24/08/2024 13:07

Boden do a lovely boat neck t shirt, I’m not such a huge fan of their things in general but this is lovely cotton and really flattering.

stardust777 · 24/08/2024 13:13

@Shezlong I did try another t shirt at Arket but the heavyweight one was the one that stood out. I was sceptical, but it looked nice on. It might be worth a try.

Ralph Lauren. Good, heavy cotton, drape beautifully, wash well. Mine are four years old and look like new.

roamingcat · 25/08/2024 08:53

I buy from organic basics but from the Men's section!

LionWings · 25/08/2024 09:10

The Next cap sleeve t-shirts are a flattering fit and wash really well
