Waterproof jacket for walks

WorldWideWords · 23/08/2024 11:49

Yesterday was the first day after many months that I didn't go for my 5Km walk because it was so windy and raining and had no suitable jacket. In the winter I wear my coat, but until that's needed, I am looking for a jacket I can wear for my walks that's breathable and reasonably stylish as I often go straight to town to meet someone for coffee.

I'd like it to be black and not drown me as I'm barely 5.2", Thanks!

North Face do a really good proper waterproof, but I’m not sure it would be classed as stylish over practical!

I wear Protected Species jackets and love them. They are quite thin but completely waterproof. I would layer under them in spring and autumn.

I love my Barbour cavalry jacket, but the lack of hood can be annoying in such weather. I think Barbours generally look stylish too, but it obviously depends on your budget. A style like the below might work? -

I was also going to recommend Barbour jackets. Their wax ones are very waterproof and you can get zip in linings for them for the colder weather.
I would highly recommend you try them on before buying as the sizes tend to be on the slim side .

I have several protected species jackets. They're fab.

WorldWideWords · 23/08/2024 14:12

The Protected Species jackets are gorgeous. I worry that size 6-8 will be too small and won't allow for a warm layer underneath, and that size 10 might be a little big and the sleeves too long.

I love the City, the Quest and the Bomber. Is there anyone that's familiar with the styles and can give me a bit of a comparison?

I have a city walker, a commuter and a trench. City walker is my favourite. I think they're slightly on the small side so would say get the 10. Or order both sizes and send one back.

I treated myself to a Didriksons this spring, it's been great and sadly well worn this summer. I'll be getting the winter version of it as well.

Uniqlo have some great ones

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 23/08/2024 14:45

The quest looks the most roomy and also covers your bum.

WorldWideWords · 28/08/2024 05:56

Feedback time.

I got the Quest and the City from Protected Species. Both gorgeous, but none at all suitable for a short person.

I bought the smallest Quest (S-M) and it was huge on me, very boxy at the front. Lovely shape from the side and back though.

The City I bought the smallest size and the fit was fairly good, but it left no room whatsoever for a warmer layer underneath, and the sleeves were still too long. Two reasons why the next size up wouldn't work for me: the sleeves would have been even longer; the back had a puffed area, this was weirs, almost as if there was extra room for something, a bag? I don't know.

Gutted because they're truly gorgeous, but both totally wrong for a small person. The search continues.
