The unicorn of winter coats?

ForSaleChesterDraws · 23/08/2024 07:42

I’ve worn the Janelle for about 10 years, it’s been great to me but I am bored of it and sometimes feel a bit grumpy. I have lost weight recently and need to rebuy in a smaller size and want something else. I have in my head a unicorn coat!

On the requirements list are
waterproof if not exceptionally showerproof
fitted waist
mid thigh or knee length
available in navy, plum, bottle green, dark grey (ie not black)
cinches in at the waist (so not a-line)
has a hood that stays up
ideally available in petite length or has the ability to have sleeves shortened
slightly more tailored/ less walking looking than the Janelle

On the no lists is
A line/ boxy shapes
Fur hood/ trims

In my head I have an insulated trench coat with a hood but haven’t seen one.

i know Didrikson and Ilse Jacobsen get recommended a lot on here but I haven’t seen anything by them.

Following. I love the look of the Rain Sisters ones but think they’re only showerproof. Thinking of going the other direction and trying a long Stutterheim one - they’re a line but from the shoulder so I’m hoping might at least look tent like rather than dumpy, and come in lovely colours.

WhenWillWanksWildly · 23/08/2024 07:51

Not really stylish but DD got a Next padded ladies coat fitting this description for secondary school and it’s still going strong many years later.

I have an ancient insulated Regatta I bring out for snowstorms but need to replace due to the stuffing coming out.

What about a waxed one like Barbour? The longer ones are often belted like a Mac but not necessarily warm enough?

The rain sisters ones look gorgeous. Not sure if they'd be warm though.

Interesting. I was also on the hunt last year and was totally unable to get anything I liked!!

My requirements were padded but not super hot. No hood or a detachable hood. Hip length. With pockets. And like you in a nice colour!

Hope you find something!

Summerhillsquare · 23/08/2024 08:09

Well I'm going to hit the Barbour factory shop for this rare beast so wish me luck!

Iwouldratherbemuckingout · 23/08/2024 08:18

Try welligogs- I got one 9 years ago and have worn it for everything. I'm petite too. They are definitely waterproof but they are pricey now, £350 I think. The cinched in waist with detailing on the back is lovely

PragmaticDramatic · 23/08/2024 08:20

Try Didriksons

Cyclingmummy1 · 23/08/2024 08:22

@Summerhillsquare please report back. I drove past last week but didn't have time to go in. I don't really want to go through the tunnel if it's not a good sale. Though I've picked up bargains the last two years.

Rina66 · 23/08/2024 08:37

I keep looking at the Sweaty Betty raincoat in navy but I like two new Next ones too, ones rubberised so I'm not sure but the other is a black trench with a hood.
I am definitely getting a long waterproof coat with a hood this year, it seems to rain every single day, I don't want it padded though as I'm not out in the elements for long enough to get cold!

I bought that SB coat in August last year and it rapidly became my favourite ever coat. It is definitely properly waterproof.
It was a mild winter last year so I just wore it over layers too.
Massive pockets so I don't need an inconvenient bag.
It's a large fit

Rina66 · 23/08/2024 10:15

Oh, thank you @WithIcePlease I didn't even think about the pockets, but what a good idea, I may just have to order it now!

ForSaleChesterDraws · 23/08/2024 10:24

Thanks for the recommendations.

I love the sweaty Betty one but just wish it had a bit of insulation! It ticks nearly all the boxes.

I have looked at Didriksons and they all look a bit functional- if I am going to get a similar style coat then I’ll just buy another Janelle in a smaller size and save money.

I’m definitely not a Barbour/ welligogs perso - I’d feel like I was cosplaying country life.

M&S do a version of the sweaty Betty one for a fraction of the price! I love mine

Rina66 · 23/08/2024 10:46

I've seen that M & S one @InandOutlander I just wish it was longer like the SB one

ChilliPB · 23/08/2024 11:55

@Rina66 I have a long waterproof Sweaty Betty jacket from a few years ago and it’s great. I wear it a lot and it’s properly waterproof, stylish and I alway get compliments on it. Definitely worth it.

@ForSaleChesterDraws have you looked at Rains? They do waterproof puffers if you’re looking for something warm and waterproof. I’d also look at Elvine, Parka London, Embassy of Bricks and Logs and Noize. They always feel like a good balance to me of functional but also not too ‘sensible’ looking. I have two Elvine jackets and they’re waterproof and warm. You might want to wait a few weeks for the autumn/winter stock to come out though.

littleteapot86 · 23/08/2024 13:22

I have the sweaty Betty one in pink and love it but it gets dirty sooo quickly and after a year looks pretty done.

I'd definitely recommend Didriksons. I only have a warm winter coat from them but it's great.

Maybe have a look at Protected Species . I've been eyeing up their trench coat recently and have only just managed to resist splashing the cash... 😍 I am also petite and have hesitated for that reason although they say the cuffs are adjustable.

littleteapot86 · 23/08/2024 13:24

Just realised I linked the trench coat in black which isn't what you're looking for but they have olive, dark red, blue, white, grey too 👍

ForSaleChesterDraws · 23/08/2024 14:34

@ChilliPB i have looked at Rains but want to avoid a puffer jacket, I’ll look again in a bit to see what else comes in. I’ll look up those other brands.

@WrinklesShminkles I have looked at that and it’s almost what I want, but it’s listed in their regular rain coats section rather than the winter coats. I don’t want mental puffer insulation, just the “enough” that you get with Janelle.

@InandOutlander that looks good, but it just looks like a spring/ autumn jacket. Does it have any warmth to it?

MavisPennies · 23/08/2024 17:24

I got a coat from joules last year which I think fits your description. Very waterproof, cinched in waist, big hood, mediumly warm. Mines in black so not super flashy but I like it and it's less frumpy than the Janelle which was it's predecessor

Flamingmentalcats · 23/08/2024 17:30

I am currently looking at the Barbour one as I am looking for a waterproof coat too that's good for autumn/spring. Have ordered and sent back 2 styles of Protected Species coats, beautiful material but didn't look right on me. I am sending the M n S one linked back too as the ties don't like up and again, don't look right on.
I like the Sweaty Betty one might order that one. Good luck in your search too

Its a bit cheaper here and a lovely colour. Im 5'5 and it actually comes to just below my knee and it is very big, wish I had bought a size smaller for a more streamlined fitting

contemplating getting the green

Thanks for that Oldraver. I am between a 12 and 14 and they only have a 14 left so it might be too big if yours is a bit big. Beautiful colour

was big on you

edit Just realised my coat is 'the janelle'...didn't realise it had a name 😂 As you were!
