The unicorn of winter coats?

I’ve worn the Janelle for about 10 years, it’s been great to me but I am bored of it and sometimes feel a bit grumpy. I have lost weight recently and need to rebuy in a smaller size and want something else. I have in my head a unicorn coat!

On the requirements list are
waterproof if not exceptionally showerproof
fitted waist
mid thigh or knee length
available in navy, plum, bottle green, dark grey (ie not black)
cinches in at the waist (so not a-line)
has a hood that stays up
ideally available in petite length or has the ability to have sleeves shortened
slightly more tailored/ less walking looking than the Janelle

On the no lists is
A line/ boxy shapes
Fur hood/ trims

In my head I have an insulated trench coat with a hood but haven’t seen one.

i know Didrikson and Ilse Jacobsen get recommended a lot on here but I haven’t seen anything by them.

Thanks for that Oldraver. I am between a 12 and 14 and they only have a 14 left so it might be too big if yours is a bit big. Beautiful colour

was big on you

I have a Barbour parka (bought in 2019 and exact model no longer available) and mine is spot on for size, especially if you have jumpers etc on underneath. Worth a shot!

I do like this, but, in my overly fussiness I don’t like a drawstring waist. I prefer a cut that cinches you in or a belt.

OP I know what you mean, I've been looking for a longline waterproof that isn't padded or lined and would much prefer one that is 'shaped' and comes in at the waist rather than boxy

Try welligogs- I got one 9 years ago and have worn it for everything. I'm petite too. They are definitely waterproof but they are pricey now, £350 I think. The cinched in waist with detailing on the back is lovely

I was about to suggest Welligogs - the Louise or Odette are both lovely.

gardenmusic · 24/08/2024 13:35

Anything on Craghopper? Reasonably priced, certainly waterproof and warm.

I've got a Helly Hansen insulated tench coat in navy. I'm petite and find the hood and sleeves a sensible length. Lovley and warm without being bulky.

Protected species trenchcoat is smart and waterproof. Not so warm by itself but you can wear warm things underneath. I love mine.

Oh these look great, they have a few listed as insulated trench coats!

I have this Rain Sisters one. It's better than showerproof although I've not worn it for hours in the rain, and reasonably warm as it has a layer of microfleece built in. It's also gorgeously swishy and always gets compliments.

They do look beautiful. I hadn’t realised that they were insulated as well.

Can I ask how you find the sizing of the protected species trench and what height you are? So tempted but I'm only 5"3. 🤔 Thanks !

I invested in the Boden Dunbar parka a few years ago and love it-has a removable fur lining so works for autumn and winter. Think they maybe do a similar version each year.

How petite are you, I’m just under 5ft and have looked at this coat a few times thinking it would be too long. My issue is the waist sitting in the wrong place!

I'm 5'3 so only just. I have quite a short torso though and also often find the waist doesn't sit right. This works for me. There are loops for the belt but in theory you could just place the belt anywhere as the waist isn't sewn as such. In terms of length at 5ft this will be about knee length.

I'm the same height as you.
I don't have it with me so not sure what size I got, but the length is fine.

Try Paramo.

Jennalong · 25/08/2024 17:30

@IfIHadAHeart

I agree Paramo is waterproof , but they are hiking jackets with hoods and not stylish.
Not what she is asking for at all.

Coatscoatscoast · 25/08/2024 18:42

Arrived at this thread, not needing a coat. Have now ordered the Helly Hansen to try. My username may give a clue to my issues. Grin

She asked for a waterproof coat in a dark colour, that cinches at the waist and with a hood that stays up. It fits all of those criteria.

I like the Seasalt plant hunter coat I think that would tick the boxes x
