The unicorn of winter coats?

I’ve worn the Janelle for about 10 years, it’s been great to me but I am bored of it and sometimes feel a bit grumpy. I have lost weight recently and need to rebuy in a smaller size and want something else. I have in my head a unicorn coat!

On the requirements list are
waterproof if not exceptionally showerproof
fitted waist
mid thigh or knee length
available in navy, plum, bottle green, dark grey (ie not black)
cinches in at the waist (so not a-line)
has a hood that stays up
ideally available in petite length or has the ability to have sleeves shortened
slightly more tailored/ less walking looking than the Janelle

On the no lists is
A line/ boxy shapes
Fur hood/ trims

In my head I have an insulated trench coat with a hood but haven’t seen one.

i know Didrikson and Ilse Jacobsen get recommended a lot on here but I haven’t seen anything by them.

Which paramo is not walking looking and tailored then ?

I like the Seasalt plant hunter coat I think that would tick the boxes x

I have actually had a plant hunter and didn’t like it. It was a drawstring waist (I prefer belted or cut to skim the waist) and the fabric was awful. The colour faded at the creases from where the drawstring waist was and at other points and it was so bloody noisy and crinkly. I ended up selling it and buying another Janelle.

She asked for a waterproof coat in a dark colour, that cinches at the waist and with a hood that stays up. It fits all of those criteria.

thanks for the recommendation, but I am going to have to agree with @Jennalong. Although they are waterproof and cut at the waist, I am looking for something slightly more tailored/ less walking looking than the Janelle.

Thanks for this thread. I’ve ordered a rain sisters coat to try. I’ve given up and accepted I will look ridiculous but I have a Sweaty Betty Nimbus for the weekends of football/rugby and it really does keep me warm and dry but I’m not sure I would say stylish (apart from the lovely sage green colour). I don’t find the Janelle warm enough for pitch side standing in the depths of winter so I sold mine.

Why does no one make this type of coat? There’s clearly a demand for it! And in some
nice colours too.

I think protected species did an insulated Mac last year which might work? They haven’t got any at the moment but that’s not to say they are planning to.

I've been coveting a Rainsisters for ages now as love the fit if them

I'm a bit of a hot person so don't wear jumpers and even in the winter just have my work polo shirt on under my coat. So maybe why I thought the Barbour 'too big'. It's probably cut for layering underneath

Uniqlo coats are great: warm, waterproof, and fitted. They sometimes come in different lengths. Try the seamless down jackets and coats.

The other thing I like about my Protected Species coat is that it doesn't crease at all, even if I've crumpled it up in a suitcase, I can wear it to a site visit for work and it looks good.

I just received my Protected Species waterproof trench and oh my it is beautiful!

I have the North Face Zaneck parka, it is a perfect winter coat, waterproof, wind proof, the hood stay up and it’s a nice shape. The fur is removable too.
